Spears
Although you have an unlimited amount of spears remember that only three of them will appear on the screen at any one time. If for example you try sticking more than three spears in a wall the first one will disappear.
Mines
Mines are effective for blasting apart wooden spear-throwing traps and also leading enemies onto mine setups which you can detonate and kill a lot of them at once.
