I knew about it for a while,the answer is that the crew read some book made by some guy that made the book (encyclopedia?) in the 1800's(?) and the book was just an encyclopedia and he wrote that the reason the lemmings were dying because they were committing suicide to "protect" Europe's land and what ever.The real reason is that the lemmings were dying from starvation every few years and the population would drop and then the next year it would go back to normal because the loved to make "love".
TL;DR:The crew read a book of theories and then they thought it would be funny to mess with people.
