Hold on, who said that Ghosts are real. Maybe it's just people seeing things. Maybe these shows are fake. Maybe its just you going blind and seeing poorly. You need PROOF that they are real, like if you have seen one or you have been haunted. We need PROOF!!!
I would not believe in ghosts, if I had not had such a real experience myself. I will explain.
It was early morning, about 5:00 AM. I was in my bed, and a crash awoke me. My cats come sprinting up the stairs, hair on end, sticking up, eyes wide, you could tell both of them were scared of something. I looked over my balcony, and all the lights were off downstairs.
At first I thought they had knocked something over. So I go downstairs to pick up whatever they knocked over. I look around, thoroughly. Nothing has fallen over, everything is where I left it.
But then I notice my living room light is on. My father leaves for work about 5:00 AM, so I thought he left it on. Then I remember it is Saturday. So I go to check my parent's bedroom. They are both there, including my father.
I go back downstairs and find my cats laying down in the living room, all normal. Then, I start to feel very cold. I check the thermostat. It is set for 80 degrees. It feels like 30 degrees. Then, I feel as if I am being watched. My cats hair stands up again, and they both bolt upstairs. I return to my bedroom, leaving the light on to show my parents in the morning, and see if they said anything about leaving it on.
I wake up two hours later, and check the bedrooms. Everyone is in bed. I go downstairs. The living room light is off. When my family gets up later, they all say they haven't been out of bed all night.
That story is why I believe in ghosts. And for everyone who is critical, everyone I told couldn't find any explanation...not even a single chance on anyone turning that light on. And my question is, if I saw the light off before I went downstairs in the first place, because the light would reflect off my foyer wall, when I went downstairs, who could have turned it on in the time I was downstairs without me hearing or seeing them, especially since I wasn't looking at the living room for all of five seconds?
Again i ask why don't they apeare infront skeptics.
Personal experinces don't count, People beleive that they have been abdeucted by aliens.
Do you have any peer review scinetific statement or evidence to prove your claim.
Please do explain how the presence of ghost makes the sorunding cold? You see that hapning in moive. Do you think if they existed IRL wouldn't they be poytraed a bit diffrent then in the movies. And that is called phobia sometimes people feel they are being watchted yet no one is there that doesn't prove that there is something watching you.
You did say it was 5 am you suddenly woke up. Mabye you never turned it out and you thought you did beacuse you were feeling sleepy. It happens to me alot of time yet i don't look for a mystic explanation I use occams razor instead.
"before claming that something is out of this world we should first make sure that its not the in the world" A quote from Michael shermer edidtor of skeptic magazine.

Supposedly, ghosts, when you are in the same room as one, pass a feeling of extreme cold, a kind which can cause hypothermia. I know this is supposedly, but I cannot help but believe it if it happens to me in context to what they say would happen. And I don't believe it because of a movie: I have never seen a ghost movie.
And personal experiences don't count? I find that wrong. I want to see it-feel it-for myself to believe. I felt it. I believe. Why can't I?
I just have your word mate. That doesn't mean you really sleep light.
.
implying that ghosts exist. Why do you think that happens ?
Again your case is quite similer to the ones seen in movies or heard in ghost stories. Like i said before if such beings exist they'll be quite diffrent then what we poytray them to be.
ARgument from personal experince is a week argument. You have no emprical evidence just someones word of mouth. Tell me how sereiously do you take this guys calim http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwyFvIsoAnw . He claims that he is jesus christ and was visted my 2 angels. Thats his personal experince , now tell me do you really beleive what he says. I can claim that i was abdectued by aliens and taken to some star system in Andromeda galaxy where i was made there ruler last night. Would you trust my claim or ask for evidence.
We can decive our selfs. If someone watches a magic show and the magacian does a trick the person who doesn't have any knowledg of the trick could claim that the guy is a real magaician. But its his short coming and he was not able to realise it was a trick. Same with scientific phenomena, people claim certin phenomena to be divine but it can easily be explained by using phyiscs but they couldn't do it beacuse they don't have enough knowledg on the subject.
"Assertions made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence" - Christopher Hitchens
I don't really care if you believe me or not. Of course, I could have done any of those things.
But me, personally, I know that I did exactly what I say. You have no cause to believe me.
Why do I think it happens? They are supposedly made up of energy. Not the kind that people use to work and all that, but a different kind. What is to say the energy can't be cold?
I am just going to leave my story where it stands.

So essential your belief in ghosts and an entire other relm of spirits and souls, what happens after we die etc, is based on a light been on and you feeling a bit cold.
I know theres more to you 'experience' then that but I have to agree with dx-hbx, a personal testamony shouldn't be mistaken for evidence in these cases, while it might be fine for that to confirm your belief in it, lord knows many people believe in other things based on similar sorts of things, it doesn't hold up when trying to convince other people. For example there are people who have smoked all their lives, 80-odd years lets say, who don't develop any problems and could easily say that based on their experience smoking causes no harm. Lets say you were a doctor and she told you this, if you then saw another patient wanting help to quit, would you tell them that you know one person who was fine and tell then not to bother quitting or would you tell them of all the studies done demonstrating a causal link and the known mechanisms of how it damages? Are they eqiuvalent levels of evidence?
Let me be the first to congratulate you on witnessing pure perfection!
Because cold is the absence of heat energy. The closest thing you could have to a "cold energy" would be something that converted heat energy into some other form of energy.

When I was in fourth grade, my older brother and his girlfriend took me and my little brother trick or treating. My mom expected us to be in by midnight. My little brother went with my older brother girlfriend to my house, but I was with my big brother. My older brother got too wrapped up with his friends and socializing and it was well past twelve, so I left on my own because I didnt want to get in trouble.
Now mind you, it is VERY dark outside and well past twelve I don't remember the exact time. I just know there were NO street lights, NO house lights, NO lights anywhere. I started to call for my brother because I thought he was following me, but he wasn't. So I started to cry, then finally panicked. I was walking around at random trying to retrace steps, but I got even more lost in my neighborhood and it got even darker.
Remember it is dark as hell, no light anywhere. After a good three minutes I gave up trying to find my way. I was just panicking. Then out of nowhere, I saw a purplish, pale blue light. It was dim, but it was something, so I went for it. When I got close it went away. Then I looked around. It came up again, this time in a different direction and even further and even dimmer. I followed and once again, the closer I got the more it faded. Then I started to hear a "...ffftt" noise. It was faint, but I heard it. I looked to my right, then forward.
I saw a faint figure in the distance. It was the same color as that light I saw. Purplish pale-blue. I squinted really hard because I didn't have my glasses. As best as I remember, she had a gown and she had silky hair and her back was to me. Now, at this point, I could not believe what I was seeing. But this was for real. She floated away and I chased.
After running around for a while chasing that figure, I ran into my older brother and he took me home.
To this day I believe a ghost helped me find my way around. I know what I saw. That's why I think ghosts are real.
You said this was well past twelve, that you were alone, in the dark no less, and scared. Are you sure there's no possibility of the light just being a car that you saw from a distance? And the figure a combination of your sleep making you see things, and your fear making you wish for some sort of maternal figure?
I'd like to believe on ghosts, I really would. It would make things so much more interesting if they were real. But there's absolutely no solid evidence to support them.
Here's my "ghost" story.
I was about 8 or 9, and I was walking through my house. I walk into the kitchen, and my cat Romeo comes dashing through the cat-door to the basement, scaring the crap out of me. So I wonder what has him so spooked. Then I hear the sound of our piano being played from the basement. So I open the door and look. Nobody there. This happened several more times over the years. Do I believe in ghosts because of it? No.
See, Romeo ran through the house like a derailed train on crack all the time. My sister would frequently practice piano in the basement while I was upstairs. And I was, and still am, very into the ghosts, aliens, monsters, etc, stories. So. Let's think here.
I'm a nine-year old kid who's really into reading about ghosts. My cat comes running around a corner, scaring me. I wonder why he's running around, but since he scared me, I think something is wrong. As any ghost reader would know, cats are(supposedly) able to sense ghosts. So, my mind pulls a sound from my memory, just loud enough to hear if you listen closely, and natural curiosity makes me investigate. See? Your mind is quite capable of playing tricks on you.
Of course, we've already established that personal stories don't count, so feel free to dismiss what I just said. The fact remains that there's no proof that ghosts exist. That's what makes them exciting.
I need evidence to believe, any lack of it just helps disprove the subject.

There are things that even science fails to explain, and I believe the subject of the paranormal is one of those things. I've had experiences that I cannot explain (and god knows I've tried) and I've spoken to people with experiences that they cannot explain.
So, are ghosts real? It is either our imaginations playing tricks on us to extreme degrees, or yes, they do exist.
There are many powerful people in this world. Few of them are responsible.
I saw the ghost of my great-grandmother...and so did my ex-boyfriend. She died in the house my parents owned, and so did my great-grandfather. It was scary seeing her. She looked really unhappy. Perhaps she was trying to scare me straight...it didn't work
Experiences you can't explain. How convenient. Science fails to explain ghosts because there is literally no way to explain them scientifically, they defy science. And your mind is incredibly good at tricking yourself, so it is very possible its all your imagination.
What an interesting and useful addition to the discussion.
An interesting theory I read on "Hauntings": If the frequency of a sound is less than 20 Hz, then we don't really hear it, but our ears still detect it, as they're still being vibrated. Because we're hearing things, but not hearing them, this really screws with our emotions, and sounds qith a frequency of between 7-19 Hz will result in fear, dread, panic, and general unpleasantness. Furthermore, if the frequency is just right, it can cause your eyeball to vibrate, which can cause simple thing like dirt on a glasses lens appear to be figures lurking on the peripherary of your vision

Thats quite an interesting theory and I'm surprised I haven't heard about it sooner. The study done where they played infrasound to a concert said that about 22% of the sample population experienced 'strange' things, anyone know what percentage of the population at large claim to have seen ghosts etc? Indeed it would be interesting to see what the proportion is for the different age groups as hearing tends to decline with increasing age, older people lose the ability to detect lower frequency sounds.

It's almost as if I didn't consider the possibility that they don't exist. Notice how I said,
It is either our imaginations playing tricks on us to extreme degrees, or yes, they do exist.
I didn't say that I believe in ghosts, I didn't say that I was right because of my experiences and thus science is wrong. I said it could be our imaginations, or they could be real.
My point was simply that science is not always right. For hundreds of years man thought that this planet was flat. They also thought it was the center of the universe. This was based on their scientific knowledge of the world in which they lived. Right now, our scientific knowledge (in the context of this thread) would be that ghosts don't exist. In another hundred years (maybe more, maybe less) we could discover that they do, in fact, exist.
To conclude, I have had experiences with what people call the paranormal, but that doesn't mean I believe in it. There simply isn't enough evidence, yet...
