Alot of people use Dark cuss it is helpful for the eyes. But some people have light on cuss they don't know how to change it or just like how it looks. I doubt anyone uses Red.

I remember when I was able to change it to green. That was my favorite. Now I use dark.

Light looks really nice but it hurts my eyes, so I'll stick with dark for now.

I've been on many a forum with user-generated themes. They'd hold regular contests to get new graphics for the board. Mostly they were for banners, but backgrounds would be submitted too. Most were really simple, nothing gaudy.
Seeing as the forums are tied in with the site so closely, though, I don't know if that'd work.
