I watched the movie 'Get him to the Greek' a week ago.
And I really liked it, especially the British accent in it.

So I wondered how they did the dubbing in German. Because such an accent can't be dubbed properly. I really have to watch it in the German language to find out how they did it.
Because I think a lot of the jokes and funny situation go lost.

Another thing is when a famous actor is always dubbed with the same voice and then you watch a movie with the same actor and he has another voice. Like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Carribean 4 (talking about the german version)
(here is a nice article about it as well:http://language-culture-translation.blogspot.com/2011/09/dubbing-or-original-whats-better.html)

So what do you think about dubbed movies? Is it always necessary or would the original be better?

Dubbed versions are an abomination. If the audience watching the movie do not speak the language, put in subtitles.

A badly dubbed advert is enough to get me fuming, theres no way I could sit there and watch that for hours at a time.

I suppose people would argue that having to read subtitles would distract you from the film but I just can't concentrate if its badly dubbed.
Let me be the first to congratulate you on witnessing pure perfection!

The more you watched a subtitled film, the faster you get used to them. Once you've seen plenty, you're barely away you're even reading the dialogue and watching the scenes at the same time, in perfect understanding.

I always prefer watching films and programmes in their original versions but it isn't always possible here for some reason. It seems that they use the same 5/6 Spanish actors for each and every film and programme that is dubbed and that annoys me.

Thanx to Craizen for the sig, love ya babe, Hubby for the avi.

Dubbed versions can be just fine - moreso with animation though where it's easier to match words to the characters talking.

But for both animation and regular tv/film I'd say use subs where possible. When the original voice matches the actions things tend to be better.

Yeah animations tend to be easier to deal with, although it really depends into what language they are getting translated in as here in Spain some of the voices make you want to pierce your own ear drums.

Dubbing comedy series/films are sometimes iffy too as jokes get lost in translation.
I remember seeing Little Britain and Saturday Night Live here in Spain and they were subtitled only so not to lose its humour as much.

At the risk of alienating many of my Pokmon friends, the early Pokmon television show dubs are the prime example of why television subtitles are the spawn of Satan.

I can't even bring myself to think that it would be acceptable to dub Pan's Labyrinth or Downfall, as they take place in the country of the original language. (In the case of the latter, though, you have enough people who don't care to learn German so that it's actually entertaining to see Hitler rant about the US elections or the iPhone, but that's another thread.)

Watch enough subtitled movies and you don't realise you're reading and watching the movie at the same time.

Exactly. It's not particularly difficult to get used to, although I recommend anyone who wants to watch the films Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle get used to reading and watching at the same time first.
