NEED HELP! - 'Error: "The application has crashed. The application will now terminate."

Ive recently tried to install sims 2 and sims 2 bon voyage expansion pack on my ACER laptop but everytime I load the game and get to the stage of selecting which sims family to play on or to create sims the game crashes and comes up with 'Error: "The application has crashed. The application will now terminate." ' ive tried deleting files and updating the sims 2 patches but they still wont work, my laptops brand new so im pretty sure it has enough space for the game? can anyone help me please?confused!
