I'm going to start on a project later today. My idea is to make forums with a Facebook-like interface. I want to take the ease of navigation Facebook has, but I don't want to re-create Facebook. I want it to still have a forum feel.
Taking what I have in mind, what would you imagine this system to be like? What have you wanted to see in a website's interface? What would make this system I want to program decent? I know this doesn't have much to do with SC, but this is the only place I can come to for decent opinions. How so? Facebook is centralised around user profiles, and the variations of that with groups etc. The chat function (not the post on walls and PMs/Emails) is secondary to that. So how exactly would you even begin to tailor a website to have something with a "facebook like interface" whilst still maintaining the feel of a messageboard. The only thing that would even come close is to use notifications, and chat system like they have and that'd be it. Well, all I can think of this early.  <3 to Craizen for the Avatar & Signature. What I had in mind is a lack of threads and pages. Maybe have forums where you can organize thing by category. The rest is basically like Facebook's news feed. The first post of the "thread" is always shown. You only get the latest 10 or so posts below it though. If you want to see more, I'll have a "SHOW ALL" button at the bottom of the thread's section.
Forums, but without all the clicking. |

I don't think so. Just imagine the Facebook news feed on the General Chat home page displaying the first post of each thread and the comments on it.

Well, I have the beta version running. If you've visited the site recently, you'll have to refresh a page to update your cache. Forum categories will go over on the right. Personal status updates appear on the main page. Your choice to display all or only friends. I'll have a 'show more' button to allow you to go back and read more, since it only displays the latest 9. Now I just need to know what needs to be changed. |
