Indie games can be really good, but I find that when they are free they sometimes lack. You can tell that free games are just templates and practice for the developers. Not that free indie games can't be great, because I've played some pretty good ones.

Free ones KoC. Minecraft is decent though, but it's not that great. Once you get past building, there are really no objectives to the game, so for me it just loses my interest. I like games that make me overcome some sort of obstacle to complete an objective, I really think that's what makes games so fun.

There are a lot of free indie games. They are free because a lot of indie developers are just starting out, so they put their first games out as free to really get a reaction more than anything. They want to know the highlights of their games and the low points so they can make their next games better. That's when they start charging the big bucks.

This means that the developers aren't working for a big company like Bethesda Softworks, Ubisoft, Bungie, etc. Sometimes they have to use their own money when developing, other times they can raise money or have people back them, like they do on kickstarter.
TL;DR - They are Independent developers who don't rely on other companies.

I think you should start out with apps. I hear they are easier to make, but I'm not 100% so don't quote me on that.
I also have no knowledge whatsoever on making video games, they seem like a work of love though, so make sure it's something you are really committed to.
