Actually I find cricket extremely boring. I just heard about being 3rd in the news.
I've never watched NFL. I prefer my country's game of football, AFL. I like it because games are high scoring (unless you get the stupid 100% defensive team that reduces scoring), it's usually fast pased (dunno why I can't spell that world today) & is the sport I grew up watching. There were 16 teams in 2010, but in the next 2 years 2 new teams joined the league. I support the Geelong Cats, who won the grand final in 2007, 2009 & 2011, played in the 2008 grand final & made it to a preliminary final (essentially the semis) in 2005, 2010 & 2013. This year they finished 3rd & lost the first final to the Hawthorn Hawks, then went on to lose to the team who finished 6th, the North Melbourne Kangaroos in an elimination final. Hopefully my team can improve next year, but unfortunately I think their days of glory are coming to an end.
So now you all know heaps about Australian Rules Football & my team.

No, I'm not one of those people who calls soccer football. It has an ovular ball which you kick & mark. You then try kick it inbetween the 2 goal posts. Try googling AFL.

Just because I feel like it I'm going to post more stuff about Australian Rules Football. I mean this IS a thread about an Australian animal, so why not Australianise SC? (Please note this post is quite long with a lot of info & was intended)
There are 18 teams: (in order of where they finished this year)
Sydney Swans Hawthorn Hawks Geelong Cats Fremantle Dockers Port Adelaide Power North Melbourne Kangaroos Essendon Bombers * Richmond Tigers -------------------------------------- West Coast Eagles Adelaide Crows Collingwood Magpies Gold Coast Suns *** Carlton Blues Western Bulldogs ** Brisbane Lions GWS Giants **** Melbourne Demons St.Kilda Saints
* This team has been under investigation since February of 2013 for possibly using illegal performance enhancing drugs. ** This team isn't actually in Western Australia *** This team was only brought into the competition in 2011 **** This team was only brought into the competition in 2012
How the game works (brief): - There are 2 teams - The game begins with 2 ruckmen (players who try hit the ball to a teammate after the first bounce) trying to get hold of the ball - Teams must get to their goals & score. Kicking the ball inbetween the middle posts awards them with 6 points. Kicking it inbetween the side posts awards the team with 1 point (or behind as it is properly called) - If a player takes a mark (catches the ball if someone has kicked it to them), they get possession of the ball & get their own space to them kick or handball (punch the ball to a player using the end of their fist) to another player - If a player takes a mark in the forward 50 (the area that is 50 metres from the middle of the goals (oval/circle-shaped)), they get 30 seconds & free space to take a kick & try to score a goal - If a player marks an opposition's kick, they get possession of the ball instead
Well I could go on & on with the rules but there are so many.
The Finals:
At the end of 23 rounds, the teams who finished in the top 8 make the finals. All other teams are eliminated & cannot win the current year's premiership. What happens when the finals begin is:
Week 1: Qualifying Finals (the winner of these matches make it through to the preliminary finals (semis):
1st VS 4th 2nd VS 3rd
Elimination Finals: (the losers of these matches are eliminated, & the winners progress to play the losers of the qualifying final matches)
5th VS 8th 6th VS 7th
Week 2: (the 2 winners of the qualifying final matches do not play this week) Elimination Finals:
Loser of 1st VS 4th, VS Winner of 5th VS 8th Loser of 2nd VS 3rd, VS Winner of 6th VS 7th
The 2 losers are eliminated.
Week 3:
Winner of 1st VS 4th QF, VS Loser of 2nd VS 3rd game, VS Winner of 6th VS 7th game Winner of 2nd VS 3rd QF, VS Loser of 1st VS 4th game, VS Winner of 5th VS 8th game
The losers are eliminated, the winners advance.
Week 4: (Grand Final)
The 2 remaining teams play each other. Whoever wins, wins the premiership.
Since that was quite complicated, I'll use this year's finals as an example. (to see the positions the teams finished, look above)
Week 1: Qualifying Finals:
Sydney Swans VS Fremantle Dockers (Sydney defeat Fremantle) Hawthorn Hawks VS Geelong Cats (Hawthorn sadly defeat Geelong D: )
Elimination Finals:
Port Adelaide Power VS Richmond Tigers (Port Adelaide defeat Richmond) North Melbourne Kangaroos VS Essendon Bombers (North Melbourne defeat Essendon)
Sydney & Hawthorn advance to the semis, while Essendon & Richmond are eliminated.
Week 2: Elimination Finals:
Geelong Cats VS North Melbourne Kangaroos (North Melbourne sadly defeat Geelong in a shock win D: ) Fremantle Dockers VS Port Adelaide Power (Port Adelaide happily defeat Fremantle in a shock win :D)
Geelong & Fremantle both are eliminated, even though they were predicted to win.
Week 3: Preliminary Finals:
Sydney Swans VS North Melbourne Kangaroos (Sydney thrashed North Melbourne XD) Hawthorn Hawks VS Port Adelaide Power (Port Adelaide pulled a huge comeback, but just fell short. Hawthorn defeated Port Adelaide)
North Melbourne & Port Adelaide do not make the grand final, while Sydney & Hawthorn advance.
Week 4: Grand Final:
Sydney Swans VS Hawthorn Hawks (Hawthorn smash the favourites by 63 points, winning the premiership)
So there you have it, brief rules, a list of teams & explaining the finals. For all American members, I'd love to hear what NFL is like & how it's finals system works. (again this post was meant to be huge)
