It was because he wasn't Catholic. Robert Catesby and Co. were Catholic terrorists (think 9/11 only 400 years ago) who wanted to assassinate the king and have his daughter take the throne as a Catholic queen. They wanted to replace a theocratic monarchy with a theocratic monarchy. The 5th of November (which was celebrated under King James's order) celebrates their failure, not their attempted actions. V for Vendetta fueled morons into believing the historical Guy Fawkes was some kind of hero, when really, he was a just a white Osama bin Laden. Also V for Vendetta is a horrible movie.
