There was an interesting program on TV last night about the rise of professional gamers. That's gamers who go around the world and take part in tournaments for money, for example, one gamer won 30K for winning a tournament. I'd be interested to know if there is anyone you know on SuperCheats who is good enough at gaming to do this?
It's held on the XOne system. I don't think 'pretty good' will get you through the qualifiers to be honest, I think you need to be exceptional. There's a hell of a lot of people entering who want that million bucks.
The only competitive online games I have & am good at are Mario Kart (3DS, Wii U) and Super Smash Bros (Wii U). I know SSB has tournaments, but I'd get thrashed by even a mediocre player at those tournaments.
Plus they're all in Japan or America.

Was the programme talking mainly about the professional gamers who play in clans / tournaments to earn money from prizes and sponsorship? Did it also discuss the huge number of gamers now making money from youtube / streaming? I know many are just doing it for fun and maybe a bit of cash, but others make a very tidy living out of it. You have to call them professionals as well, even if they don't play to win.

Yes, the programme did also mention the huge number of gamers now making money from youtube/streaming, apparently there's a huge market out there for it. I was stunned at the thousands of people that go to these gaming events and literally sit and watch a huge screen of someone else playing a video game as if it was some kind of big sporting event.
But it is.. Its people competing at a game of skill for a prize. Not as much sweating (maybe) and less chance of an injury. But still on many levels a sporting event.

I suppose it is if you look at it from that perspective, I personally can't see the thrill of watching someone else have fun and earning money playing a video game.
And some don't see the thrill of watching people chase / throw / hit a ball around a field and earn millions. They are all just games for fun until money gets involved. But we accept spending time and paying out money to watch traditional sports.

I'm playing CS pretty good and since that time I started to play it, I took part in some championship and even began to win some money. So it`s possible uniquely!) Yu ought to try it surely)
I hear what you say testuser, you have a point although for me personally there is no comparison. For me you cannot beat the traditional sports that require physical prowess as well as mental ability, sports like football, boxing, tennis etc. Video game tournaments to me are just modern day chess tournaments.
I wouldn't call video game tournaments a sport (like chess is commonly classified), but video games, like sports, require skill, patience, and strategy, especially when in a tournament. One wrong move can mean game over.

I kind of agree. There is a lot of contention over whether you can call gaming a sport. Like Chess as you said as well. I do think though that when it comes to the entertainment, the value you are willing to spend in terms of your time or paying for tickets to attend events, there is no difference. Just depends if you enjoy watching a physical contest or a virtual one. Or more likely both.
