John Carpenters 'The Thing' is a classic, same with Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead'. I couldn't take 'Scream' seriously, it made me laugh more than anything. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho has to be near the top of the list of all-time great horror movies along with 'Silence of the Lambs'.
Haven't seen older scary movies like The Exorcist, but more recently only the Conjuring comes to mind.
It's the only scary movie I've seen recently that is actually spooky, and not just a crap ton of jump scares/loud noises that somehow qualify movies as being "horror" films.

I haven't seen any old horror movies, but in recent years The Conjuring was pretty good. It didn't rely heavily on jump scares like "horror" movies now days do, although I do think there were a few in it. It was generally just a really creepy movie. I hope the second one is just as good.

I haven't seen 'The Conjuring', I'll have to give it a look. I love a creepy horror film, they just don't seem to make them these days, it's all cgi blood and guts.
