When I was a kid living in the UK the school summer holiday was six weeks. I now live in Spain and my son goes to a Spanish school I find out the school holiday is a ridiculous twelve weeks, apparently it's because it gets so hot in Spain. I'd be interested to know how many weeks the summer school holiday is around the world. I think in Australia it's in December?
In K-12 (USA System) breaks for me were typically: Summer Vacation - 10-12 Weeks Christmas Vacation - 2 Weeks Spring Break - 3days - 1 week, this was changed frequently while I was in school.
College is typically: Christmas Vacation - 3 weeks - 5 weeks, depending on when you start in the fall. Spring Break - 1 week Summer Vacation: 12-16 weeks, again depending on when you start etc..
I hate summer now. 3 months of too many kids filling and over populating every beach, then the tourists on top of that. When they all go back you can hear a communal sigh of relief.
When I went to school it was 9-5 just like office hours. 2 Weeks for Christmas, 1 or 2 weeks during easter, 1 week in autumn and 6 weeks for summer.
Me personally I would make them have the same time off as any worker, here being 49 days maximum.
Thanx to Craizen for the sig, love ya babe, Hubby for the avi.
My school holidays were exactly the same as yours Balthiersbit. I went to school in London in the UK, where did you go? I seem to also recall half-term breaks which where a week long and as the name would suggest in the middle of each term.
I was born in Newcastle-Upon Tyne. Born and bred Geordie, so it's no suprise that we shared the same holidays. I wouldn't be suprised if we are close to the same age too.
The school I went to was in County Durham.

You're probably I'm guessing at least ten years younger than me, I'm 47. Rich is 42 and I have no idea how old Mark is. I don't even know what he looks like, I've never meet him. I just have his telephone number which I ring when I see a problem on SuperCheats. If voices are anything to go by though he sounds posh and super intelligent unlike me and my thick London accent.
In Australia we have 4 terms of school; each going for 10 weeks usually, but sometimes 9 or 11. The 4 terms have to add up to 40 weeks of school. At the end of each term we get a 2 week break except at the end of the year, which is 6. This gives 12 weeks break combined in lower school, and 15 this year for me. This year I get 9 because Yr11 finish early. Our days in lower school were 9:00am-3:20pm excluding Wednesday, which was 9:00am-2:40pm. Our days now are 9:00am-3:20pm on Tues, Thurs, & Fri, 9:00am-2:40pm on Monday, & 9:00am-12:55 Wednesday (if no seminar).
Obviously the 3 month American system sounds nice when you hear about an entire summer off, but only 2 and a bit weeks break in an entire school year is ridiculous.

Matt77 it must be strange having Christmas Day in the middle of your summer holiday. One of the things I miss about living in the UK was when it was Christmas there was a chance it might snow and when that happened it felt like how Christmas should feel. I now live in Barcelona and I'm told it has snowed twice in the last thirty years so I'm not going to experience too many more white Christmas's.
Mark - The typical thing to do in Australia is to go to the beach (since it's Summer) on Christmas Day. I don't/never have on Christmas though. I would've loved to live in the northern hemisphere and experience snow and Christmas at the same time.
In terms of having it during the 6 week holidays, it's actually perfect. When I was younger and would get the present or game I wanted, I would play it heaps and would have over a month to enjoy it before school started again. There are pros and cons of living south of the equator.
