A Sydney man has been charged with attempting to murder two police officers during yesterday morning's counter-terrorism raids.
Omar Balajam, 28, from West Hoxton is in a stable condition in Liverpool Hospital, recovering from a gunshot wound.
During a bedside hearing this afternoon, he was charged with 13 offences, including planning a terrorist act and the attempted murder of two police officers.
The man was shot in the neck yesterday during counter-terrorism raids.
It is alleged that he fired a number of shots at police.
He has also been charged with a number of firearm offences, and assault.
He has been remanded in custody until an appearance at Central Local Court on Friday.
Seven other people charged with planning a terrorist act are also appearing in the court on Friday.
Two alleged members of a Melbourne terrorist group have been denied bail.
Hany Taha, 31, of Hadfield and Abdullah Merhi, 20, of Fawkner, were among nine men arrested yesterday and charged with knowingly being a member of a terrorist group.
The Melbourne Magistrates Court was told the group was devoted to a notion of jihad that included martyrdom and killing women and children.
Police allege the two bail applicants took part in military training and that Merhi wanted to be a suicide bomber.
After considering submissions overnight, Magistrate Reg Marron said the allegations are extremely alarming and the men had not proved why they should be released.
The two men join the other seven in being remanded in custody until January.
Magistrate Marron also had called for evidence from Victoria's Deputy Corrections Commissioner Paul Delphine to hear about the prison conditions of all nine men.
The court was told they are being held in separate cells in maximum security conditions and are only allowed out for three hours on one day and six hours the next.
The court also heard they are not allowed to mix with other prisoners.
Melbourne lawyer Rob Stary, who is acting for the men, says his clients have no prior convictions and both have stable work and family backgrounds.
"They are not charged with being involved in the assisting or preparation of a terrorist offence, they are not charged with any weapons offences, they are charged with no conspiracy offence - they are charged with being members of an unspecified and unnamed terrorist organisation," he said.
Australian Federation of Islamic Councils president Ameer Ali says he has had a positive meeting with Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock in Canberra.
Dr Ali met Mr Ruddock and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, John Cobb, to talk about the possibility of reprisals against Muslims in the wake of yesterday's raids.
Dr Ali also told the ministers about his concerns with the counter-terrorism legislation.
But Dr Ali says he still wants assurances that Muslims will not be targeted by "rednecks" in the community.
"There are rednecks in our society and they can take law into their own hands," he said.
"I want the assurance from the Government that my community will be safeguarded and they will be safe, and they will not be subject to any unnecessary attacks by the rednecks."
