Does this game have any similarities to the original Mortal Kombat of the 80's?

I used to play Mortal Kombat when I was a kid during the eighties in arcades in Oxford Street in London, does this game have any similarities or has the original concept totally changed? I can remember one of the warriors was called Raiden who had some kind of electricity flowing through his hands when he did he's special moves and another was a girl called Sonja who had a few good moves which she done with her legs to defeat opponents.

Now I come to think of it I still think I've got the original Mortal Kombat game which I brought for the SEGA Megadrive years ago.

It does have some resemblance to mortal combat 2. i only had mk2 for mega drive. You do have raiden, sonja, lui kaing and all of the scorpion, sub zero, reptile and the other guy. But the answer to your uestion is yes, it does have some resemblance to the original.
