Go to chao garden of choice (I find it works best in Station Square).
Find worthless chao (almost everyone has one). Pet it while facing it. Jump forward and try to land on chao. Time it right. Press y as soon as you land on it. It may take a few tries. You'll be petting thin air. You can run around like this for as long as you like. You can also let go of y. If you bump an item or go off a ledge you will usually get back you're running stance.

i never gonna do that, to mean, but i did it by accident once, but not your way, the chao just moved away and I was petting air
