That's an interesting theory. Quite funny, as well. Two guards get a bit drunk, decide to play a trick on a couple of Jewish women come to bring offerings to that criminal who got crucified, and end up inadvertantly giving rise to the what is now the most widespread religion on Earth. Prime example of the domino effect, wouldn't you say?

Technically, that isn't true. While the specific phrase "Oh God" and all derivatives are specific to Christianity, crying the name of the gods or mythological heroes has been a feature of languages for a long time ("Hercle! di immortales!"). I would imagine that the name was merely changed upon Christianity becoming the dominant religion in Europe.

Yes, but I doubt this guy would object to me saying "By the immortal gods!" (literal translation of "di imortales!"), at least not on the grounds of 'taking the Lord's name in vain'.

What do you think angels look like though? I don't think there would be costumes shops back then. And I don't see any reasons for the guards to play a trick on them. And if they were wearing halos, then they would have to have something attached to their heads to hold them up.
