I need help killing boss

I honestly didn't have very much trouble with Great Ape Vegeta...I've been playing rapid-press-combat games for a few years in a row, so that might have helped, but...it's Great Ape Baby that's been giving me trouble. I keep getting stuck on the part where he uses those giant energy balls after the first sequence with the button pressing. I'm using a light hero. I've finished every available training at that point aside from Raditz and Bardock, so I've got lots of different skills that I'm able to use to my advantage, but I still can't win. The giant energy ball attack and the attack where he shoots three times in a row are nearly impossible for me to dodge without running back into them...would finishing Raditz's training and Bardock's training help?
