Twice now when I reach the stage in the game where you go to Twinblades camp I've had to buy a bandit seal instead of winning it by playing Guess The Addition because the bloke just ignores me other than some supercilious remark when I first enter the pub area. What am I missing? What am I doing wrong?

you dnt win the seal you always have to buy it anyway, you get twinblade hero doll for winning the pub game

No, in twinblades camp you can win it. Or you can buy it from the bandit.

Or you can kill the bandit which gives you good points and take the seal from his body
