You can get lucky, sure. Some parts of the game also involve a lot of guessing and guessing correctly often is a matter of luck (ie. Penalty Shootouts). Occasionally a really simple strike that the Keeper always blocks and laughs goes through him and you score, that's more based on numbers being crunched, but to get that to happen you'd need to be lucky.
In order to be the best player you can be:
-You need to be skilled at the game, good at passing, crossing, striking, tackling, etc. This is the most important thing.
-Pick the team with the most technically sound statistics. If for example, in Manager mode, don't trade players just so you can get your favourite stars, pick the people with the better statistics for the job (game-wise, not current performance League-wise).
-Formation. Now this is tough one. You've got to be careful, pick the formation that you think best counters whatever formation your opponent is running. It's about counter-formations. If they lock you down with equal formations, THEN go ahead and choose the formation you feel most comfortable with.
-Luck. As mentioned before, there are a few things you can only leave to luck. Don't let this bother you though. An "extremely lucky" player will not beat a technically sound player with a good formation and good players.
