Group 1
Newcastle 2-3 Aston VillaViduka 3 . . .Barry 14, 80
Martins 84. . Mellberg 90+1
MotM: Barry, 9.
The game hit full throttle straight away, with Newcastle attacking, and Barry taking out Owen, on the edge on the box, to recieve an early booking. Geremi stepped up to take it, and managed to whollop the crossbar, but, lucky enough the rebound fell straight to Viduka's feet, who slotted into the empty net.
11 minutes later, Barry atones for his earlier mistake, by thumping home, from 20 yards, straight into the bottom right corner, giving Given no chance.
The rest of the half, Newcastle had the best of the chances, with two key misses from Owen and Martins, that could have sealed up the game.
The second half was pretty much dead, until Barry's second half deflected effort sent Given the wrong way, and the ball just about looped in, under the bar. But, soon after, Martins levelled the scores, once again, with a mazy run from about the half way line, gliding passed Curtis Davies' aimless lunge to smack a goal for the home side.
When it looked like the game was destined to be drawn Mellberg headed in powerfully, Young's corner, for the precious 3 away points, that puts Newcastle under early pressure, in the league campaign.
Barcelona 2-0 Inter Milan.Eto'o 19, 34.
Inter started this match, by far the better team, as Figo came close on many occasions, but it was to be Barca who took the lead with a swift counter atack, clinically finished by none other than Eto'o.
It wasn't too long before Barca scored another undeserved goal, seemingly identical to the first, countering Inter, as they piled men forward.
Inter continued to dominate, Ibrahimavic missing chances, and Dacourt picking up a yellow card, fora poor tackle.
This match ended 2-0, with Barca incredibly lucky. Putol was also booked in this match.
Group 2
Liverpool 3-1 WBA
Carragher 9. Beattie 90
Kuyt 37
Torress 77
Liverpool simply brush WBA aside in this match, as the Championship outfit were simply dominated. The score could have been much, much worse, but WBA can cling onto the fact they still have a Goal Difference that isn't utterly humiliating.
Carragher opened the scoring, in open play, would you believe, storming forward, and getting on the end of Alonso's pass, he drilled it into the net, like a striker on a hat trick.
Kuyt doubled the lead before half time, with a neat one on one finish, 40 minutes before Torres ended any speculation as to whether WBA were still even slightly in this match.
WBA grabbed a consolation goal, in the final minutes of the game, with their first attack.
Sunderland 0 - 0 Olympiacos
Being honest, there's nothing really to report on this game at all. 0-0 bore draw, hardly any attemps on goal. Wallace (Sunderland) and Ledesma ( Olym) both recieved yellow cards.
Group 3
Huddersfield 0 4 Chelsea
.. . A Cole 15
. . . . . Carvalho 17
. . . . . Essien 20, 58
This match wasn't as one sided as things may seem, or at least compared to what Liverpool did the WBA. Chelsea scored from 3 set plays, 2 corners, in 2 minutes, , Essien scored a header, from a free kick, and then followed it up with a piledriver.
Collins recieved a straight red card, for the foul that lead to Essien's first goal.
