Help for fighting

I'm having a general need here. I don't quite understand the system of fighting here. I know how to do it, but it feels awkward as whenever I am charging my attack, I have to wait around for the guy to hit me. Should I run around while I am waiting or will I get hit anyway? Sorry for the dumb question

I usually run around. All games have learning curves and it took me a while to get used to the battling system too. All weapons have different charging speeds. I just usually make sure that Im not in the way to being attacked then move in for the kill. You will get used to it Im quite sure.

If you run around without holding flee, you will eventually get hit (unless your guy attacks before the opponent and kills it). Without holding flee, your guys will run a bit slower. It won't be noticeable.

So what should I do?

In order to successfully fight and win just keep evading the attacks by running away (not fleeing with the L2 button unless youre almost dead). Just keep running around so youre not in the line of fire until your weapon is charged then go in and hit.
You will get magiks and weapons that will make this quicker to do. Remember to watch your team incase they get hit badly too!
