Kratos is back, and he's having a
really bad day.
[Update]May 12th 2006 - Though the news is hardly shocking, Sony has confirmed that burly god-smacker Kratos is rushing back for more in God of War II. The sequel to IGN's 2005 Overall Game of the Year is currently in development for PlayStation 2 at Sony's Santa Monica studios, under the direction of God of Games David Jaffe.
Scheduled for release early in 2007, God of War II will put players back in the role of Kratos, now a ruthless god. Kratos leaves his newly-won Olympus throne to defeat "untold horrors" and, if he can, change fate itself. Kratos is prepared for the journey; he wields new combat moves -- in addition to familiar attacks -- and elemental magic to crush his foes. The game offers new environments, new enemies (including Cyclops, Cerebus, and the Flying Gryphon), new puzzles, even more boss battles, and mini-games integrated into the story.
Given that the first God of War was a refreshingly new property, gamers may fear that a second game would sink in sequel stagnation. Jaffe's confident, however.
"In the gaming world, it's rare that a sequel equals, let alone eclipses the original," he said, "but I think this is going to be the exception to the rule in terms of quality, gameplay and story. I always said that God of War was my dream game, well no longer, God of War II really is the game I've always wanted to play."
Stay tuned for plenty more on the new God of War as details emerge.
