September 22, 2006 - Monster Hunter Portable was one of the brightest spots on the PSP map last year, becoming the highest-selling game in Japan by bringing the PS2 phenomenon to the portable platform almost entirely intact. Capcom has quickly rushed together a sequel for PSP, and despite not adding some features fans of the series have craved, we expect this version to deservedly go gangbusters as well.
Undeniably, Monster Hunter Portable was one of the most gorgeous games on the PSP platform (in some cases, gorgeous beyond many console titles of the same caliber), and this sequel clearly does not disappoint either. Tremendous vistas range out for miles, with animated waterfalls and forests full of trees. You will witness monsters several times larger than your own hero, using every bit of the PSP's wide-angle screen to display their majestic animation and razor-sharp texture work in full glory. The framerate is buttery-smooth, and character detail is again ridiculously sharp for this game's complex and ever-changing character models.
Themed after the PS2 sequel (the first PSP game took much from the PS2 remix of the first game), Monster Hunter Portable 2nd stresses winter and desert landscapes amongst its many hunting grounds. Similarly, the hairier and scalier creatures from the PS2 sequel are your most common prey, adding some variety to the visuals and the PSP game's bag of effects tricks. Zones of the game still load in bits and chunks as you and your party travel around (rather than smoothly transitioning between areas), and we didn't notice any tremendous leap (or drop) in loadtime speed for the sequel.
Wireless gameplay is yet again included for four adventurers, although Capcom has sadly not seen fit to add online gameplay to the game. In Japan, the PSP game still attracted players together for local party play, but we really wish this game would have had its full online modes kept from the PS2 version. To make up for it, however, Capcom will include an online download feature to grab up new maps once the game is released.
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd has been scheduled for release in Japan in February 2007, with a stateside release likely a few months later but not yet officially on the books
