Kombat: Armageddon is the title for the next game in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. It will be released for Xbox and PlayStation 2 video game consoles, rather than Wii, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. The reasoning behind the decision to stay on current generation consoles was to wrap up all the current loose ends, and make for a fresh start for the next gen installment.

On October 3, 2005, it was revealed that Midway registered the Internet domain name MKArmageddon.com on September 23, 2005. In addition to breaking the news on the domain name, TRMKadded that Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will feature an enhanced and improved fighting engine used in the previous games, as well as an expanded Konquest mode and that the game would remain on current generation consoles to make these improvements possible.[1]

On October 4, 2005, an online chat event was organized by Mortal Kombat Online, known as Fight Night. Ed Boon publically stated that the next Mortal Kombat game "will have a brand spanking new feature that we are very, very excited to announce." Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks producer, Shaun Himmerick, stated at the chat, "while no platforms have been announced yet, but there is plenty of life left in these current systems." According to Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will have more characters than any other Mortal Kombat game, although there was no mentioning of returning or new characters.[2]

Confirmed roster

Roster render.Armageddon will attempt to include every single fighter from the six main installments of the franchise thus far. In addition, a few characters from spin-offs and remakes (including Rain and Sareena) will also be included. It is unclear whether or not other minor Mortal Kombat characters will make the cut, however, in a recent interview on GameSpot at E3 2006, creator Ed Boon hinted that an obscure minor character named Meat will appear.

The following was an early list given by Game Informer magazine of characters initially confirmed to appear in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon: Ashrah, Baraka, Blaze, Bo' Rai Cho, Cyrax, Dairou, Darrius, Drahmin, Ermac, Frost, Fujin, Goro, Havik, Hotaru, Hsu Hao, Jade, Jarek, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kabal, Kai, Kano, Kenshi, Kintaro, Kira, Kitana, Kobra, Kung Lao, Li Mei, Liu Kang, Mavado, Mileena, Mokap, Moloch, Motaro, Nightwolf, Nitara, Noob Saibot, Onaga, Quan Chi, Raiden, Rain, Reiko, Reptile, Sareena, Scorpion, Sektor, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Sheeva, Shinnok, Shujinko, Sindel, Smoke, Sonya, Stryker, Sub-Zero, and Tanya.

There are also two new characters that have been revealed since the Game Informer lineup named Taven and Daegon. Both of them will appear in the Konquest Mode, and perhaps as playable characters in the other modes of play as well. Also absent in the report was Motaro, as it was suggested that he may not make the cut. However, Ed Boon confirmed in a later interview that Motaro will, in fact, appear in the game.

It is worth noting that some of the character outfits seen in the Game Informer render may have different appearances in the final product.

A small controversy has arose from the original trailer, which features all the characters on two sides (good and evil). Simply put, sworn enemies are seen running along side each other, while some settled disputes appear to be revived as former allies are on opposing sides. At this time, it is unclear why this is, as much of the story behind Armageddon has yet to be revealed. Some speculate this confusion is intentional, as to fit the thesis of a real "armageddon" taking place within the Mortal Kombat universe, where anything and anyone goes.

Additional information
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will sum up everything that happened since the first Mortal Kombat game, presumably ending in the destruction of the Mortal Kombat universe (as per the title). It will be the final decider on who will die or who will live and will end the generation of MK fighters. In a sense, Armageddon is "wiping the slate clean", allowing the series to come back with a fresh start.

This will allow the series to enter the next generation consoles with the next generation of Mortal Kombat fighters. While there is no clear information about who will survive, let alone who will emerge as the winner of this latest battle, Ed Boon has already strongly suggested that such fan favorites like Scorpion and Sub-Zero have a high possibility of returning in future Mortal Kombat games, while the Game Informer article suggested that Kurtis Stryker, an unpopular character, will probably die.

It is set to be released October 2, 2006, for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. No Gamecube release information has been given, and it is uncertain at this time whether or not such a version will be produced.

Aside from the large returning cast, Armageddon will have updated versions of some classic arenas. From reports the arenas set to appear are:

Goro's Lair (MK1~MK2~MK4) - without deathtraps
Armory (MK2) - with two deathtraps (a roller and the burning liquid)
Kahn's Arena (Battle Arena) (MK2) - with 4 deathtraps (lava pool, acid pool, spikes and rollers)
Living Forest (MK2~MK4~MKD)
Wastelands (MK2) - with a deathtrap (5 burning catapults)
Subway (MK3~UMK3) - with the classical deathtrap (2 trains)
Bell Tower (MK3) - with a deathtrap (five spikes)
Prison (MK4) - with a deathtrap (an helix on the rooftop)
Lumber Mill (MKA)
The E3 version of the game featured a number of characters, each with two fighting styles, one hand to hand & one weapon. The list of styles for the characters shown at E3 is shown below:

Goro - Shokan, Gauntlets
Stryker - Hua Chuan, Night Sticks
Sektor - Choy Lay Fut, Pulse Blade
Shinnok - Pao Chui, Amulet Staff
Sheeva - Kuatan, Shokan Blades
Kintaro - Tiger Fist, Saber Teeth
Fujin - Mian Chuan, Wind Blade
Rain - Zi Ran Men, Storm Sword
Kai - Moi Fah, Machete
Sub-Zero - Nan Chuan, Kori Blade
Reiko - Pi Gua, Devastator
Jarek - Kuo Shou, Kick Axe
Scorpion - Zha Chuan, Ninja Sword
Shao Kahn - Tai Tzu, Wrath Hammer
Sareena - Yue Chuan, Demon Fangs
Kabal (Konquest Demo) - Sun Bin, Hookswords
Taven (Konquest Demo) - Hapkido, Drakesword
In the two new video interviews of John Podlasek (Senior Producer) and Ed Boon (Creative Director) produced by IGN and Gamespot respectively, some interesting tidbits of information have come to light about the upcoming Mortal Kombat Armageddon.

Techniques such as Breakers and Parrys can be done in the air
Podlasek hints that Konquest mode has TWO characters, one good, one evil
Characters are reduced to TWO fighting styles; multiple weapon styles is a possibility
Kreate-a-Fighter includes the ability to assign Taunts
Weapons are available in Konquest mode, which appears very much like Shaolin Monks
In terms of online there is "another thing we really can't talk about right now" - Podlasek
Konquest will be set as a race between the 2 characters, Taven and Daegon, who are trying to become their father's successor.
The Character select screen is so large it needs to rotate to show all the characters.
At E3 2006 more information was released about the game:

Blaze will appear as the main boss of Armageddon
Taven will appear as a playable charater
Finding unlockables in Konquest will play like Shaolin Monks, eg. tread on a certain spider to unlock a character
There are surprise charaters appearing like Meat.
Noob and Smoke seemed to appear as one character in the Demo.
The Krypt will be replaced with The vault, There will be only One type of Kurrency.
There are alternate ways to unlock all the features.

Kreate a Mortal Kombat character feature
Ed Boon recently said at E3:

"There have been a number of create-a-character modes in wrestling and boxing games but we wanted to expand on the areas players had control over,"

"We thought it was important to let them define their attacks as well as the look of their fighters." That?s why Armageddon lets players set their fighting styles, right down to the attack associated with each button.

About how it would work with it's on-line ability:

"It will really be interesting to see how people will play Armageddon online when they have about 60 existing characters to choose from as well as the ability to take their created fighter and go online against other created fighters,"

"The idea of taking your created fighter online and seeing how they measure up to other players? fighters is going to create the most exciting and unpredictable fighting experience ever."

So far, the KAK feature seems to only have a human form to work with, though Tarkatan and vampire features were available. Considering the wide variety of kombatant species in the game, it is unknown as of now whether or not the finished product will have an option to change your KAK's race, as well.
