need help with 3 smoke mission NEW GAMER please help

I can not get past the thrid mission I have read and tried all the help listed here. I can not get the bad guys onto the spikes I tried throwing them hitting them with r1 and attack button nothing works. Is there a pattern that you have to go with or what. I have started thinking that there might be something wrong with the game because of this and it will not take any cheat codes at all Please use as much detail as you can this is the frist time I have ever had a ps2 and I am still learning things about it that is a lot of my problem I think.
