if you picked torchic, you will want to evolve it to combusken for the first gym.
if you picked mudkip, level it up until it learns: water gun or mud-slap.
if you picked treecko, level it up until you learn absorb
2nd gym: is a fighting type gym.
if you picked torchic, and you still have peck or a different flying type move, all the better. if you picked treecko like me, you will have a tough time. i'm still on it.
mukip: it is like torchic, but with water=type moves.
