Yeah. For example, in the orignals and R/S/E fire was weak for the firts few gyms, not in S/G.

Even so, I pick Charmander for my starter in FR and LG. Oh, and by the way he CAN beat Brock when he learns Metal Claw. But that wasn't around in R/B/Y. As for misty, well I always have something else by then so I beat her too.

In johto I loved cyndaquil but I could never get farther than the 7th gym. Also, I never had any money. So I started with totodile and i beat the game completely exept mew and celebi. I wouldve had mew but i had to go and start a new game on the rented silver verison with 3 lv 100 mews. Ok heres my analasis:

Kanto starters:

Charmander: Can beat a few gyms and isnt very good against rival. Bu I find he puts up a good fight in the elite 4 if taught dragon claw.

Squirtle: Can beat most gyms and can beat rival with ice beam. Also Is good on elite 4 if taught ice beam.

Bulbasaur: Good against a few gyms but cannot easily beat rival. Doesnt fair to well in the elite 4.

Johto starters:

Cyndaquil: Can learn thunderpunch to defeat rival. Smoewhat good in the elite 4. Can beat a few gyms.

Totodile: Good against rival with ice beam, and buts a pounding on the elite 4. Also can beat a lot of gyms.

Chikorita: Is not good against many gyms. Cant beat rival easily. Not to good against the elite 4.

Hoenn starters:

Torchic: Can beat most gyms, but has a lot of weaknesses. Cant beat rival easily. Puts a pounding on the elite 4.

Mudkip: Can beat rival with ice beam. Is not affected my electricity but is very bad against grass. Semi good against elite 4.

Treeko: Very fast, cant beat rival easily. Pretty good against elite 4.

So anyway, as you can see, water is usually the best choice. Although fire is usually good on the elite 4, it cant help but be bad in some gyms. The best starting johto party I find, is:

Cydaquil:

Cyndaquil
Mareep
Bellsprout
Onix(trade)
Geodude
Pidgey

Totodile:

Totodile:
Mareep
Ratata
Onix
Weedle
Hoothoot

Chikorita:

Chikorita
Onix
Hoothoot
Mareep
Onix
Ratata

Thats just what I think. The starters are very tough to choose from, because they all affect your gameplay. It all comes down to what combos you use WITH your started to determine which one is really the best.

Good bye everyone, it's been fun!

I don't know why, but I've always had something of a soft spot for little Chikorita. (Probably because my real name is part of Meganium's... XD) It's more of a challenge. Starting with Chikorita kind of forces you to balance your party better. (Even so, when it comes to R/B, I don't much care for Charmander as a starter. It takes for-freakin'-ever to learn any good fire-type moves. Maybe that's improved in FR/LG...? I dunno; I haven't played most of the third-generation games much.)

My opinions on all starters:
Kanto:

Charmander: Has an awesome movepool which, if used correctly, can wipe out all but the second gym (if it's R/B/Y, it can't beat the first gym either). Exellent for the Elite Four (except most of Lorelei's pokmon).

Squirtle: Get a Lapras or a Starmie, both are better than this guy at level 100. Seriously, a poor Water pokmon with a rubbish movepool. Does good against a lot of gyms, but why start with him when there's better Water types out there. Does bad against the Elite Four.

Bulbasaur: Great for the first two gyms. Has a great movepool too. Does pretty good against the Elite Four.

Johto:

Cyndaquil: Good against most gyms with the right movepools. Has a great movepool which beats its weaknesses. Does good against the Elite Four (mainly Koga, but also against some of Karen's and Will's pokmon).

Totodile: The biggest problem with starting with this guy (or Chikorita) is that Fire types are very helpful but they are hard to find. But he does well against a lot of gyms and does well against the Elite Four.

Chikorita: Same problem with Totodile with the Fire types. But this guy isn't helpful on any gyms and doesn't do too well against the Elite Four.

Hoenn:

Torchic: Has lots of weaknesses, but beats some gyms, has a great movepool and does well against the Elite Four.

Mudkip: Probably the best by a small amount. Does well against most gyms and against the Elite Four. Also has a good movepool.

Sceptile: Not so good in-game movepool, but very fast and does well against a lot of gyms. Also pretty good against the Elite Four. Leaf Blade rules.

Overall:
Charmander: 9/10
Squirtle: 5/10
Bulbasaur: 7/10
Cyndaquil: 7/10
Totodile: 7/10
Chikorita: 5/10
Torchic: 8/10
Mudkip: 9/10
Treeko: 7/10

I will admit, Chikorita and its evolutions aren't very useful offensively. It could make a good defender, though, if given the right moves. That could be something to experiment with, when/if I restart my Gold... Hmm.

Akagenai: Meganium is pretty bad in G/S/C, except in a few places in Kanto. But that's mainly because Grass isn't useful against any Gyms in Johto. Defensively, Meganium is pretty good though.

The_Arbiter101: Best type yes?

Riku994: Plus, some have crap Special Attack stats. Take a look at Entei.

ShadowGX: A lot of those who can do them badly though.

I know it's bad against most of the gyms. That I will admit. What I usually do early in the game is level Chikorita up between New Bark Town and Violet City to at least level 8, when it learns Razor Leaf. Then, I take it to that route kind of on the side, you know, the bottom of that route between Blackthorn and NBT. I use Razor Leaf to beat the Geodudes there, who offer more experience than the other things you can fight at that point, until it reaches level 16 and evolves. My rival becomes a non-issue, and it makes it easier to keep it around the right level the rest of Johto. (My second Pokemon is always Geodude, since I can weaken it with Tackle without knocking it out... XD)
