Beat Whitney. Talk to the girl in the house on the right of the gym. She'll give you a Squirtbottle. Use it on the tree and a Sudowoodo will attack you.

you have to go all the way round through azalea, dont worry about the tree yet, just go down to the next route

Oh, now I understand. You're going the wrong way. Beat Falkner, go through Union Cave and to Azalea, and then battle Whitney. Don't forget the sidequests like beating Team Rocket and stuff.

but theres a lot of stuff you can do in that cave later on in the game, get lapras and do two puzzles from the unown ruins...
