i started with a totodile and a cyndaquil.i am about to beat the game with them.i say any water type pokemon from the second generation and up is ok to start with.

Piplup is quite a good Pokemon, but you may have problem at the last dungeon of the main storyline. In return, you will have some easy time with the last dungeon of the second part of the story (except boss fight).
Piplup and Chimchar combo reminds me of my first go in this game (in Jap version).
The best Pokemon is Pikachu, as protagonist. It will help you beat the game quite easily with Discharge. But you can choose other Pokemon if you want some challenge.

I beat the game with my AR (just used max health cheat) it was fun. Getting to the other dungeons where you have to explore with a pokemon annoyed me the lake one because politoed keeps useing perish song. I just used Diagla and kept using roar of time everytime I saw a politode I just used it and did it though the 25 levels.
Lucario it is suppose to be built in your DS you just need to have internet connection that allows you to use the internet without a plug. if u don't then your out of luck.

^I don't know where you find the fun in beating the game easily...
@Lucario1220: Nah, I only say he will have trouble. He will beat the game eventually. I myself use Piplup+Chimchar on my first go (Jap version) and Chimchar+Turtwig on my second go. I beat the game, but has some problem with boss fights (which involves many Pokemon).
