Basically, all three starters are great. The best is Mudkip, though.

You should catch a Zigzagoon early in the game to get some nice items via its Pickup ability.

A Poochyena and Ralts can also be useful early in the game. Ralts is rare, though, but it can help you throughout the reast of the game as well, not just the beginning.

Also, once you get to Dewford Town, go to the nearby cave to catch a Sableye. This pokemon can basically cheat your way through the gym there.

If you want a lot of variety in yur team, Torchic ends up bein' the best. Mudkip is sorta limited.

The rest I agree with MV on.
Baby I like it.

I'm saying Mudkip is the best for one reason only: Swampert has one type-weakness and a pretty good move pool. But like I said, all three starters in R/S/E are great.

He has a decent movepool, an' for Ruby/ Sapphire he'll be fine. If it were Emerald I'd really push Torchic on you, 'cause he comes in super handy in the Battle Frontier. Though, since you'll be gettin' Kyogre bein' that you have Sapphire (I assume since yur in the Sapphire forum) you may want to go with Treecko or Torchic. Treecko is the best Grass starter easy.
Baby I like it.

Early on pick torchik if you can, then in the grass before the forest (petalburg forest?) catch a wingull to train, then in the forst catch a wurmple and evolve it into dustox, who's awsome for the first couple badges.

Well, for me I'd choose Torchic or Mudkip. Blaziken can learn Sky Uppercut and Wattson's Pokemon are either Electric and Steel- type or Electric- type. Thumbs Up I used to have the game and I wasn't able to beat the Elite Four, even though it says they've gotten harder to beat in the newest Generations. Doh

I like mudkip and would choose him because he is strong against a lot of gym leaders.
He is also very cute Smile

I picked torchic as my starter (named him Blaze ;D) and I caught a ralts right outside Petalburg (I think that's the name... I can't remember). I would also recommend, even though I won't, catching a zigzagoon. It can be very useful.

Hope that helped! (which it probably didn't XP)

I would choose Mudkip due to Swamperts high stats. Teach Swampert Surf, Earthquake, Ice Beam, and Rest for a good balance. I would catch a Zigzagoon and a Ralts early on. Once you can get them get a Bagon, Roselia, and Skarmory. But once Bagon is a Salamence, you can get rid of it for a good fire type like Torkoal. This should be a balanced team that will help you the entire game.

choose treecko (good against wallace), catch wingull on route 103 (good against roxanne brawly and tate&liza) catch geodude in granite cave (good against wattson, flannery, norman and winnona) catch a herracross in the safari zone (good against sidney, glacia and steven) catch a glalie in the shoal cave ( good against drake)

Yeah blaziken can learn sky uppercut but that´s in lvl 69 and i don´t think somebody would try getting their starter to lvl 69 in the third gym, not even in the 6th gym you would have it in lvl 69. Also mudkip has a certain advantage with the third gym because he learns mudshot in lvl 16 (when it evolves);)

For a starter Pokemon, take your pick, they're all sweet. (Personally though, I'd go Mudkip) Nice early game Pokes include Ralts, a powerful psychic, Lotad, Water/grass dual typing is great offensively and defensively, and Whismur also ain't half bad in my eyes, it's movepool is mind blowing.

I started with Torchic, and he's been doing well for me. Here's my current lineup. Any advice for changes that can easily be made in Sapphire, please, tell me! I'm on the 5th gym now.

Combusken (29 LV, 79 HP, 66 ATT. 39 DEF. Sp Attack 55, SP DEF 40, Speed 44.)
Pelipper (31 LV, 82 HP, 39 ATT, 75 DEF, 61 SP ATT, 49 SP DEF, 55 SPEED)
Mightyena (27 LV, 80 HP, 53 Att, 50 DEF, 42 SP ATT, 41 SP DEF, 50 Speed)

my main ones, extensive training on

Sandshrew (17 LV, 45 HP, 37 ATT, 34 DEF, 16 SP ATT, 18 SP DEF, 20 SPeed)
Swablu (18 LV, 49 HP, 22 Att, 28 Def, 18 SP ATT, 36 SP Def, 28 Speed.)

Looking at this they need a LOT of work. The best moves for each are:

Combusken: Double Kick
Pelipper: Wing Attack or Water Gun, Supersonic works well too.
Mightyena: Bite
Sandshrew: Dig
Swalbu: Sing

Well first i choose torchic cause its fighting type and fire type it is effective on your first obstacles. Second wild pokemons near rustburo like nincada, silcoon, and wurmple is like desert to torchick beacause you can always one hit em with peck: first move. Third, during your way to dewford lets see if you trained em it'll be lvl 20 so it now know double kick and ember, in the gym leader you can use double kick brawlers pokemon and maybe one more cause he uses super potion he'll lose. Fourt, on your way to slateport you will encounter team magama so their pokemons are vulnerable against torchick. Lastly just to be a spoiler: steven, the pokemon leauge champion, is using rock types so fighting type is very effective.
