Can someone please tell me which Pokemon i should choose to start off with at the begining of the game (e.g. rattata,caterpie,etc.)

Get a catterpie. You can get it to a butterfree easily, and it will learn confusion. Then you can destroy brock with him.

Get a Mankey. It will learn Low Kick at level 8. You can catch one left of Viridian City, in the grass before you fight you Rival a second (but optional) time. It is the first patch of grass on the way to the PKMN league. Mankey evolves into a powerful Primeape. Also Xbox_gamer's idea is good too, but Butterfree isn't the kind of PKMN you want to train the entire game. It is weak against many types and cannot learn very many powerful moves by itself in it's early levels. Even at level 58 it is still too weak.

I THINK the best one is nidoran(male), he learns double kick wich is supereffective against brock and he becomes a very powerfull nidoking
if you want to, you can evolve him very fast because you can find a moon stone in mount moon. |

No pokemon are the best starters, but i think charmander, squirtle and bulbasaur are good, because you can get all of them without cheating.

squirtle is the best it uses bubble to defeat brock and bite to beat misty because starmie is a water psychic type
