I think each character should have their own Adventure mode, with differing routes and puzzles which require the character's unique abilities to solve. It would end with a fight against Master Hand, Crazy Hand or Giga Bowser, depending on the route taken. Possibly even all three simultaneously for the hardest route...

SSBM had Giant, Tiny and Invisible modes. I've thought of two other ones; Metal and Low Gravity. Metal mode speaks for itself, but Low Gravity would be the exact opposite. Jump high, fall slow. Like on Battlefield during the Wireframes fight.

I did hear that they're trying to give Brawl a decent one-player storyline. So there's hope for your idea Pan.
To expand on it, there should be set fights for each character (e.g. Mario will fight Bowser no matter what route he takes) just to add to the sense of storyline.

In other areas, if they bring back (and I hope they do) stamina mode, you should be able to adjust the starting health, instead of always having 150HP.

Online play is a must for a franchise like Super Smash Brothers.
But, for my own idea, what I think would be cool would be an online tournament. Having 64 players compete for the top. :D
