Yeah DB. Smashers meet other smashers(strangers) over the internet all the time. Don't think we've ever encountered an internet predator. There's a pretty nice smash community going on :D I've met a few strangers myself, and I'm still alive and well

I'm in South Carolina. The smash scene isn't very good near me either. Most of my friends are PS2/Xbox fanboys. I've yet to find someone else who smashes in my grade at my school. But then, I don't exactly go around with a sign saying, "VVV Plays SSBM. To smash with me, call ***-****".

Not everyone on the internet is to be distrusted as serial killers and the like. There have been tons of Smash tourneys organized online with a good attendance of people that don't "know each other" in person until that day. I don't think I've ever heard of some'n bad happening in them... Hell these tourneys tend to be Smasher-hosted and are sometimes in their houses, apartments, etc. or the host lets people stay with them on occasion for the night. *shrugs* Nothing happens.
