It's just a "bug"
As in a "bug" in the program
Except these "bugs" aren't filtred out of sites as often as there supposed to. And tey latch on to your computer.
When you see the light at the end of the tunnel, the tunnel will collapse

Um, not quite. Cookies store information. An example is Supercheats. When you log in, it puts a cookie on your PC that tells the site you are logged on and who you are logged in as. Every page you visit on Supercheats from then on will look for that cookie. Some cookies will expire after a while, and others will stay on forever until deleted. Once the cookie is deleted or expires, you will be logged out.

Do to there nature however, they can be used maliciously; but thats rare anymore.
