Someone told me that you can get an upgraded form of Goldbrabd called Elswynbrand or something is this true or bogus? If it is true how do you get it?

It's called Eltonbrand and it's extremely hard to get. You probably couldn't find any info on it because you got the name wrong :P
This is what you do to get it in the patched version of the game: Get Goldbrand and have exactly 11171 gold. You will get a message saying "Go to hell Carolina!" and Eltonbrand will be in your inventory.
