It's not a problem with your design; I just don't think it's something that would be used effectively here.

Yeah i've seen them on other sites, and while some are used quite often, i don't think it would be used that often on here. It's nothing against the design, we just don't really have a need for it here.

Having it on the side like that would mess up for people with small screen sizes. My laptop screen is fairly good sized and i only have 2 inches on either side of the site

Would be easy to rearrange a few things and make room for it above the topic.

I don't really like the idea of a chat box, I think if you really want it, then set up a IRC server/channel. It isn't that hard nowadays.

He's right. That's the reason the SCT Newsletter never turned into a HTML newsletter. It can't be hosted here, and Rich won't allow it to be hosted anywhere else.
