All of the games are independent of each other, besides the sequels (X and X-2, XIII and XIII-2, etc). They're all JRPGs, though there's a few spinoffs in other genres.

That's just insane to me... Such a huge series. Always thought you couldn't be a gamer if you hadn't touched a Final Fantasy game. :p

I haven't actually played many of them. The newer ones don't appeal to me all that much, as it's the kind of genre that, these days, releases games that are just a bit too...huge...for me.
If you have a PS3, look Final Fantasy VII in the PSOne Classics on the Playstation Store. Download it. Play it. Love it.
Just make sure VIII isn't your first one...gameplay would be too alienating for newcomers. IX is supposed to be excellent, but I haven't played it (yet) so can't judge.

I'd personally start with the first one - But I'm the type of person who plays the first game in a series all the time. Even with a series that isn't the same story through the entire thing, like FF. I feel paranoid that I'm not going to understand something.

The very first Final Fantasy was hard. I never got far. Two of my characters were killed in battle and Phoenix Downs were ridiculously expensive. I got wiped out when I reached the first boss.
II I never played much, III was ridiculous, IV I got to about the halfway point but the sudden ridiculous jump in difficulty was frustrating. Never played V or VI.
Final Fantasy VII is a good place to start, based on my experience. The gameplay is simple enough to get to grips with, and has an excellent story.

i am playing Eclipse War Online ( CBT ) it has a unique way of play you can transform into a mob you killed or you buy from item mall it can give you additional stats and skill and some buff according to he card you get or you use so far no lag no bug if you want to join our guild
just choose rumen raise and find FAME guild ^^ we need more member hurry up!!!

@Volke - If there was one thing I'd say about the FF series as a whole, it'd definitely be the lack of difficulty balance. Always seems too easy or too hard, and a lot of the games have a terrible difficulty curve.
