I read from one guy who was homeless for months that the worst part is the boredom so he turned to drugs and alcohol.

I thought homeless people only used money to roll joints.
I think a lot of them choose to be that way. Most of them have mental diseases that keep them from interacting with society properly, and living a proper life.
Edit: To answer Adam's question, I would just give him/her the money. What they do with it after I give it to them is their business and I couldn't care what they do. It's up to them to make the right decision, be it buy food or do something that will improve their situation.
