Erica (the woman) was actually a female clone of Eric, and she hid from him when he crossed the portal from the underground tunnel to the street.

Eric was not even aware of her existence, but she certainly knew of his. In fact, she had been made for one specific purpose, and it was the reason she could never let him see her.

The old woman had wandred off and Eric was scanning the shop windows on his side of the street. Even if he could have seen her, he was looking in the wrong direction. He then walked into a shop on that side. She was surprised to see what shop he had entered.

It was a reverse-laundromat. They take your clean clothes and return them dirty along with any money you would've spent cleaning them. But when he opened the door and looked inside, he found it empty except for a small cube that was projecting the image of the drowning old woman. He knew of only one person who made these hologram cubes, but had no idea why he would do this.
