Then and Now

So, how have things changed for you guys since 'back in the day' when we were all regulars? Where are people at in life? How often to you guys find yourselves checking in?

The majority of my time on SC was spent as an incredibly bored teenager. I think more than anything else it was great being part of a community like this and gave me a lot of technical skills I probably wouldn't have learned as soon otherwise. In terms of behavior I was an awkward mess, but hey that's youth for you.

I'm now a few days out from my 21st birthday, (nope, not a drinker) am a full time college student who's about to finish up an associates (Business Administration) in the next few months and then move onto a bachelors program most likely at the University of California. (Haven't chosen the exact one yet.) Now I also started working for Target as a first job while in high school 3yrs, 8 months ago and am actually with them 30hrs a week to this day as a Guest Service Team Leader (Translation: Department manager, Head of Complaints xD). Between work, school, a wonderful girl I've been with for 4 years, and the family and friends I've been keeping busy! Actually about to go across the pond at the end of next month to Paris (learned French!) and Croatia (where I'm from) for the summer with the GF. Also taking a day trip to London, can't wait!

How have things changed? I don't even know where to start...

When I started here in 2009 I was an innocent little menace to society. I was 16 and only knew the routine of school and home. When I wasn't pretending to study in class, I was here goofing off with the rest of the people in Teams.

I'm 23 now, unless I've forgotten a birthday again; in that case, I'm 24. I have an associate of applied science degree in computer programming technology, and 14,000 dollars of debt to show for it. In the 6 years since I was really active here I've ridden every high and low in life I've come across. I've had at least 5 jobs ranging from forklift operator to bartender, because I wanted to learn every skill I could get my hands on. I've partied a bit harder than I should have at times, and woken up on the side of the road with nothing but the shirt on my back. I've mixed every liquor and tried every mainstream drug I could get my hands on, only to find a lack of interest in them all.

Now that I've finally calmed down and found a rhythm to my life, things are good. I work about 15 hours a day between different jobs, but it helps pay off that student loan debt. At night I relax and cook with my friends at IHOP, and during the day I program websites for people. Despite the skill set and degree, I don't really plan on working for some technical company. I'd rather do my own thing.

I have no plans until 2017. Around August of next year I plan on starting my bachelors degree.

I cringe to think about my earlier days here. Perhaps it's best to focus on the future. I have a loose plan on what to do.

Step 1: Get my license. That's Saturday.

Step 2: Get my car. That's probably June as it's still in Chicago.

Step 3: Get a job. Preferably behind a firearms counter.

Step 4: Put most of my money into savings. With a $10 an hour job I could have 50k saved up in 3 years.

Step 5: Take technical school classes on machining, welding, and woodworking.

Step 6: Attend a gunsmithing school when I'm over 21. This is only if I'm not terrible at machining.

I hope to at least stay on the course for the first 4 steps.

OK so this got weird pretty quick. But I'm really happy to read all the news of the education gained, courses planned and future aspirations. Sounds like some brighter futures in progress.
