I have to agree with you Matt, Atlanta on their day are very dangerous. If they had a season with Jones, Pitts, and Ryan firing on all cylinders there is not telling what heights that offense could reach. I remember about three years ago Ryan to Jones was the deadliest combo in the NFL.
I am not exactly sure that is why the Falcons want to trade Julio. I think it has more to do with his age and contract along with the fact that Pitts is very similar in size and speed. The 2022 Draft is strong, but not the QB Class. If Falcons were wise, they would trade Julio for a 2023 1st so they can have better odds of landing their next franchise QB. That said, Thibideaux is a cant miss edge rusher next year.
I guess so if the contract is the problem. Why doesn't Julio Jones just take less money or restructure his contract, the guy's a proven elite wide receiver and Ryan doesn't have many years left at Atlanta.
Who is the next generation quarterback in the 2022 or 2023 draft, there's one every year. Last year it was Lawrence, Burrows, Darnold...
Julio Jones is the epitome of "pay me". He was on a 5 year deal and in year 3 they basically ripped up that contract and gave him a ridiculous 3 year contract worth 66M. Now only Deandre Hopkins is paid more as a WR and it seems like Julio once again wants a new contract. He won't be taking a cut.
That tells me everything I need to know about Julio Jones, he just wants one last big payday before he retires. Another Dak Prescott, as long as he gets his money he doesn't care about the team winning.
Don't get me wrong, Julio has been and probably still is a top-5 receiver his whole career. But he is already on an overpriced contract. Some guys have the mentality that they always need to be the highest paid guy at their position. A wide receiver shouldn't be taking up 12% of the entire cap.
I didn't realize Julio Jones was taking up 12% of the entire cap. No wonder the Falcons want to get rid of him. That's quarterback money... I can't see anybody taking Jones on now I know that, it cripples the team. I think Julio is looking at a pay cut if he wants to continue playing in the NFL after his existing contract expires.
How did that happen? Who sanctioned that. Not even Jerry Rice was worth that. No wonder Atlanta were trying to shop Ryan and Jones, they are a couple of old players taking up one third of the Atlabta cap. Must be frustrating for Falcon's fans, the team can't get rid of them and until they do they will not be able to build a Super Bowl winner. Maybe taking Pitts wasn't that smart, they will probably end up regretting not drafting Fields.
Can you name the player who shut down Pitts whenever they played against each other in college.I'll give you a clue, the guy is a freak.
Some players just have such a combo of skill and fan-favoritism that it's impossible to just let them walk. We're at a point where if teams do this they're called cheap and fans get annoyed and the team gets a reputation of not paying players what they're "worth" which isn't good long-term.
The player Warrior13 was Jamin Davis, the linebacker Washington drafted with the 19th pick overall.Took Pitts out of the game each time they played against each other in college. Not many linebacker run a 4.37 40.
I understand now why Atlanta paid Jones but in hindsight it has caused them a massive problem. What happens when Jones contract expires, he must realise he's looking at a pay cut.
Totally forgot about Jamin Davis. I hope he does well in the Pros. I wanted Miami to draft him if they weren't able to get Jaelan Phillips. Davis should tear up the NFC East since only the Giants have a notable TE.
Wow, seems like Julio is turning into a locker room cancer. Then again, if Atlanta were dumb enough to give him that big of a contract, who can blame him for taking it? This is what happens when a team thinks they are close to contending, so they hand their star player a ridiculous contract. It's far better to be sensible, with a hint of ambition.
LA Rams will be in massive trouble if they don't win a SB soon. They will see the consequences of their reckless actions (not having a 1st rounder until 2024).
~ Sometimes people change, but sometimes you just open your eyes & realise who they truly are ~
I never blame a player for playing hardball with negotiations and taking the big money. It's nice if a player takes a cut but I never expect anyone to do it (unless the player is old and visibly declining). Individual careers are too short for a lot of guys to only put the team first.
The Rams will be an interesting case study going forward. They've been by far the most aggressive team in the last 5 years or so and have had some success. If Stafford can win them a SB I think we'll see other teams start to reevaluate the value of first round picks.
