I'd hate to be that next guy, someone somewhere is walking into a nightmare situation. It was hard for Aaron Rogers to be accepted by the fans after Brett Favre so to be accepted after Tom Brady is going to take some doing. Mac Jones is still working on it in New England and until he wins the Patriots a Super Bowl the Patriot fans won't be happy with him.
The 2018 draft was supposed to be arguably the best QB drafts in history. Instead:
1 - Mayfield (traded for a 4th round pick) 3 - Darnold (traded for basically nothing & is now a backup QB) 5 - Allen (Pro-Bowler) 10 - Rosen (third team) 32 - Jackson (Pro-Bowler)
At the time I thought Allen and Jackson would be busts, but they are the only ones who succeeded. The others have failed, and two of those people failed miserably.
This is why teams are better off building a team around a QB who they trade for. Either trade your high 1st round pick away, or take elite talent in a different position.
~ Sometimes people change, but sometimes you just open your eyes & realise who they truly are ~
Sounds about right. Even Elway/Marino draft had a number of busts QBs in between. Come to think of it, Luck/RGIII/Tannehill draft ended up being just eh with Luck retiring early.
I like Herbert but I'm not as high on him as a lot of the media/NFL fandom seems to be. I thik he's going too top out as a top 7/8 QB. And the Chargers always underperform.
Justin Herbert and Josh Allen I think will be the top quarterbacks who will be considered for the Hall of Fame. Maybe Lamar Jackson if he wins a couple of Super Bowls, the rest will just drift into obscurity and be the answers to trivia questions.
Being a top 10 quarterback for ten years putting up the kind of numbers he has put up the last two years pretty much guarantees Justin Herbert consideration for the NFL Hall of Fame. I can't see anyone outside of Mahomes even being mentioned.
If Eli Manning gets into the Hall of Fame then Justin Herbert will make it too. I know Eli Manning has won a couple of Super Bowls but apart from that I always thought the guy was just above average, nothing special.
Why is Doug Williams not in the NFL Hall of Fame. The guy was the first black American to be a Quarterback in a Super Bowl, he got MVP and threw for four Touchdowns in one quarter. Doug Williams was also the first black American quarterback to be drafted in the first round. I know his stats may not be fantastic because he started his career with the Bucs who were awful in the 70s, but he still managed to guide them to the NFC Championship game against the Rams who eventually lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl. The guy make history all over the place, he even played two seasosn in the USFL otherwise his stats would be a lot better.
Why would Lamar want to wait until after the season when there is a chance he gets injured. If I was him I'd want my guaranteed money now. Paying Murray now has opened a can of worms, quarterbacks are going to be queuing up to get out of their rookie contracts. I wonder what the Bengals do now with Joe Burrow when he knocks on the door wanting a new contract.
Ja'Marr Chase is not ranked in the top 10 of wide receivers? I can't figure that one out. I have him top three at least.
There's only one reason why Lamar would take that risk: the hope of more money.
But, again, I don't see him get more than Rodgers, who is currently at 50 million a year. Honestly, if I were the Ravens, I wouldn't try to sign him just yet. When talking about 50 million a year for a guy who is rather frail, it might be wise to wait and just franchise him for a year or two.
That can prove to be costly, Washington and Dallas will tell you all about that with Cousins and Prescot. The problem with franchising a player instead of playing them is they become disgruntled which makes the situation worse. Neither Cousins nor Prescott will ever win a Super Bowl. Cousins chokes in big games and Prescott falls apart in the second half of big games.
Kyler Murray and the Cardinals however I give them a chance of at least reaching a Super Bowl. During a stretch early last year they were the best team in the league and unbeaten, and then it went horribly wrong.
Yeah, it can definitely get costly, but will either franchise tag be worth close to 50 million? If not, then it might be a viable option. Lamar got hurt last year, and that could be a continuing trend. Plus, he will definitely start to slow down as he gets older, eliminating one half of his game.
I am wondering what Mahomes really feels about the quarterback contract situation is now. When he signed his 10 year deal two years into his rookie contract it looked great, now when you look at it it doesn't look that great, he left a lot of money on the table. In a few years time he won't be saying all the nice things he is saying now.
I agree with you about Lamar Jackson, he is another Robert Griffin III who fortunately hasn't suffered a serious injury yet. When he does and is no longer about to run but must rely on his arm he will become mediocre as half his game will have been taken away as your rightly pointed out.
The franchise tag is the average of the top 5 salaries at the position, so it'll very quickly get close to $50M. I'm iffy on the Murray contract. He's good, but he's shown some red flags. And the language in there of him being obligated to watch film is concerning. Plus that team always falls apart in the second half of the season.
And don't forget that he will be without DeAndre Hopkins for the first six games. I still think they make the playoffs, but they could see some rough patches.
