It's been a few years since I followed the oscars. I was glad to hear that Gary Oldman got one. I've not seen any of the nominated movies i think although I hope to catch a few of them sometime.

Thats his first too I think, about time! I can't believe he got one after DiCaprio. He is such a great character actor and he still manages to surprise after all these years. Johnny Depp used to but now he seems to stuck in his Jack Sparrow persona. (yey Persona!)
Thanx to Craizen for the sig, love ya babe, Hubby for the avi.
How many of those pirates movies have they made now. The first was great. the second was ok.. after that I forget.. I guess they must make money though.
I used to love movies. now I tend not to be interested in anything much new. grumpy old fart really.

Funny enough testuser I?m the same. Movies don?t seem to capture my imagination like they once did, it must be something to do with old age. The most recent example of this was the Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie. It just felt to me like a run of the mill movie, it didn?t pump me up at all.
I dont think its age, I think its simply that the age of great movies is over. Everything has been done, there is nothing original left. Remakes, comics to films, video games to films, books to films. There also seems to be more of a want for quality over content. What great visuals, oh the CGI was excellently done but the script is an absolute snooze fest.
Think about how many movies Marvel has coming out or already out this year? There are films I like but some like Last Jedi just makes you leave the cinema thinking....what have I just seen? WHy did they do that?
I also think movies are just too long these days.

Yeah.. we are the 3 grumpy old farts. We've seen it all before. But the younger generation are experiencing stuff fresh as we did once. Just now it's all in higher definition and like colour and stuff.

TV is the way things are heading these days, especially with Netflix. 40-60 minute shows where you'll get usually 8-24 episodes a season are much easier and entertaining than one 90-180 minute movie and then a 1-2 year wait for a sequel. I watch some movies, and for them to be enjoyable they need to be below 2 hours, or have a complex story line open to enough interesting ideas and plot twists. 120+ minutes of ordinariness is not ok. Whereas with TV shows if you get an ordinary episode, it's over in about 45 minutes and there's another episode the next week to redeem your expectations.

I think you may be right Matt, the TV serials that are being produced these days are not much different in quality to movies. Spot on what you say about the length of the movies as well, I struggle keeping focused on a two to three hour movie unless it is exceptionally good. Having to wait a week as oppossed to a couple of years to find out what happens next is a big plus.
I feel like 90 minute movies are too short and feel like an extended episode, but too long it too much of a drag. I like 2 hours as a length, or perhaps a bit over. I've watched a few 3 hour movies in my time and while they're good if they're engaging, if they're not, it's horrible.
Movies tend to also have a lot of preamble at the start to introduce things. I like when a movie is made to follow on from a tv show so you know all the characters and the storyline already. The most recent movie I watched on tv had about 20 minutes of preamble rubbish, and then 70 minutes of actual movie. It's a shame, cause it was essentially an extended tv show after that point, and it never got a sequel.

I think it's that originality isn't explored as much. Producers are like sheep - once they see one movie become a hit, they follow that film's producer's moves and differentiate them slightly.
