Commonwealth games

You aussies enjoying the games down on the gold coast? Looks like Australia is doing pretty well. Not getting to see much of the sport myself unfortunately.

Haven't watched much at all. The coverage can get unbearable. We brag like hell when we do well (we're at the top of the medal count) and then have a big cry when we fail. So these games it's filled with stats of how many times we've swept the pool events & interviews with Aussie medal winners. Although we did watch someone we know win a bronze medal in the 200m IM (and was off silver by 0.02 seconds) after she was very close to giving up swimming.

OML New Zealand is over-reacting with this. Showing it on three channels all the time and then talking about it constantly on the news! Before the commonwealth games I already stopped watching TV1 because MSN's news ACTUALLY showed me actual stuff happening!

Sounds like you lot are a bit similar to us, since NZ usually do well in these games too.

I never watch TV One news because a majority of it is sport and then I go onto MSN and it's like "YouTube shooting" and "two actors found dead in a hotel". I'm so moving to the UK at the first chance I get LOL

Been a spate of knife crimes here, in London anyway. Not sure what's going on. but everywhere seems to be going backwards in terms of safety and happiness

It seems to be going ok here. Although a third of the Cameroon team + some other African athletes have 'gone missing' ie fled their country.

Oh that's what happened? They said something on the news and then just changed the subject and didn't say much...

What happened to those Cameroon athletes that went missing? Two boxers and a wieghtlifter I think it was.

Not sure. Eventually they'll be found and sent back to their country, where they'll likely face harsh punishments.

The Closing Ceremony was a mess. I doubt the Gold Coast will ever host the games again. The Opening was criticised for being lackluster and being too Indigenous-focused, and we were told the Closing Ceremony would improve. But no, there was 0 footage of the actual athletes that won medals, and they were sent out of the stadium in the blink of an eye. You'd think Australia, who loves to brag about their success, would actually acknowledge these athletes who had success. There were headlines before it too about the new flag bearer. We never even saw him. The channel televising the Games even criticised it live on-air lol.

Instead of athletes, we got a bunch of slightly well-known singers combined with nobodies singing about 10 songs as 'entertainment'. If my country wants to stop being the laughing stock of the planet, you'd think we'd stop being idiots huh?

I think that's the music/film industry getting their backs on sport LOL

I mean, music is ok in a closing ceremony, but actually get big names.

Will be interesting to see how Birmingham goes in 2022.

I mean a lot of big names are US and UK artists and it takes sooo long to fly from US/UK to Australia so they probably asked them and got declined.

I see Birmingham in the UK is holding the next Commonwealth Games. That made me laugh, it's gone from the beautiful gold coast of Australia to grey and dreary Birmingham.
