Anyone but Osaka. So Azarenka will do.

I'm unfamiliar with these people. Why the Osaka hate?

Osaka - 2 time GS winner. Has been heavily promoting BLM. She essentially caused the Cincy tournament to be delayed by a day.
Brady - Breakout tournament. Hadn't lost a set until playing Osaka.
Serena - Serena
Azarenta - Azarenka. However she has been beyond average for years, up until a 10-match winning streak.

Zverev - Touted as the next big thing but has constantly flopped at slams. However he's now made 2 consecutive GS semis.
Carreno Busta - Veteran clay court specialist who randomly peaked at this US Open and in 2018 (also made the semi). Was Novak's 4th round opponent.
Thiem - The 'Prince of Clay', but is also accomplished on other surfaces. Has played in 3 GS finals, losing all 3 (twice Rafa on clay, once Novak at AO)
Medvedev - 2019 US Open runner up, losing to Nadal in 5 sets after being down 2 sets to love and a break. Very talented, and will win multiple slams eventually.

Thanks. The only tennis players I really know are the big 3 men and guys like Andy Murray and Roddick, and just a few of the women. Venus sisters obviously and a few others.

Osaka is just too much right now. I probably would've wanted Serena if it were between the two in the championship, and that says a lot since I sincerely don't care for her at all. lol

And might I say I LOVE how you referred to them as the Venus Sisters - made my day! XD

Hoping for Azarenka & Thiem, I guess.

Just want the French already. Is Roger gonna skip it as well? How about Joker?

Roger had knee surgery, similar to in 2016, a few months ago. He will miss the entire 2020 season. Novak is definitely going to play. He'll be more motivated than ever to win a GS.

Osaka beat Azarenka 1-6 6-3 6-3. Azarenka lead 6-1 2-0 before Osaka raised her level to a level where no active player can match her. Grand Slam #3 for her. She will probably reach double digits in this weaker era. However, she will win zero GSs on clay or grass.

Thiem should thrash Zverev. From all accounts Zverev player average in his QF and SF. In the QF he was down 1-6 2-4, and in the SF he was down 3-6 2-6 3-3. Meanwhile Thiem beat an in-form Medvedev in straight sets. Should Thiem win, it will free him up mentally, and maybe he can challenge Rafa at the French Wiseguy

Federer is definitely done then. If I was Joker, I would skip French and go all out for Wimbledon. 2/4 alone this year would be stellar.

Bleh to all the rest.

Lol. Warrior, Wimbledon got cancelled 4 months ago. They had pandemic insurance, and took their money and ran, but also gave out decent amounts of money to the lower ranked players who had no income. Grass courts are difficult to maintain, so it couldn't have been held at a later date. Basically as soon as it got cancelled, Roger made the decision to shut his season down and take a slow, careful approach with his recovery. Novak has one more chance this year.

And I don't think Roger is done. This surgery is identical to what he had at the end of 2016. When he came back fresh, he won 3 GSs in 18 months. I still think he will be a contender for Wimbledon 2021. After all, he was by far the better player and should have won it in 2019, if not for horrific choking.

Then Nadal must win the French if no more Grand Slams.

Thiem beat Zverev 2-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 in the final, coming from 2 sets to love and a break down! This is how the match went:

- Zverev won the 1st set 6-2
- Zverev lead 5-1 in the 2nd set, before eventually hanging on for 6-4
- Zverev broke serve to lead 2*-1 in the 3rd set
- Thiem broke back immediately
- Thiem won the 3rd set 6-3
- Theim won the 4th set 6-4
- Thiem broke serve to lead 1*-0 in the 5th set
- Zverev broke back immediately
- Zverev served for the championship at 5-3
- Thiem broke back immediately
- Thiem broke serve to lead 6-5 and serve for the championship
- Zverev broke back immediately to reach the 5th set tiebreak
- Zverev got the minibreak for 2-0
- Thiem got it back on serve
- Thiem got the minibreak and lead 6-4 with 2 championship points
- Zverev saved them both
- Thiem won the next 2 points, and the title

Thiem is now the clear #3 in the world, leading Roger by 2500 points.

Thiem is good on clay court as well, right? Might be him and Nadal in final at French.

Thiem's last 4 French Opens:

2016 - Lost in the semis to Rafa
2017 - Lost in the semis to Rafa
2018 - Lost in the final to Rafa
2019 - Lost in the final to Rafa

If Rafa wasn't playing, Thiem legitimately could've won 4 French Opens in a row. In 2 of those years Thiem beat Novak too.

It's crucial that Rafa does well at Rome (warm-up tournament). if he bombs out early without much preparation, he'll be rusty for the French. He plays the US Open semi finalist Carreno Busta in his first match...

If Rafa plays a few matches at Rome, he's a 95% chance of winning the French. Thiem's chances would be 3%, and Novak's 2%.

Rafa lost 2-6 5-7 at Rome (clay court tournament). That was a huge shock. Thiem and Djokovic will be licking their lips if Rafa doesn't sort himself out.
