BIOGRAPHY OF GIOVANNI DILUZIO
Giovanni DiLuzio was born in Turin, Italy, on 8 October 1931, to a family of mafiosi that controlled many of the illegal goings-on in Tuscany, which included making illegal alcohol, building stripclubs, and piloting prostitutes, all of which were closely watched by a special police force organised to minimise the influence of the family, who made more than one hundred million dollars a year through the illegal business. The father, Giuseppe Salvatore DiLuzio, was at the time the most wanted man in Italy and had long used his financial solvency and legal cleverness to elude the police sent after him and to gain the respect of several officials and politicians and was born to a family whose distaff heritage is rumoured to be linked to the British royal family. Giovanni's mother, Bianca Valetteri, a native of Forl, was a former politician who was removed from the position of state treasurer when a scandal identifying her as the co-operator of the DiLuzio family's main prostitution headquarters emerged; her father was a former Vatican priest that abandoned his practice because of the strict celibacy regulations, while little is known of her mother except that she died whilst giving birth to her.
In 1935 Giuseppe DiLuzio was arrested for tax evasion ? a replication of Al Capone's decline from power ? and died in custody, leaving the authority of the entire criminal business in dispute until Giovanni's entire family was killed, with Giovanni and his sister Amanda being spared because of their ages but left on the street. Giovanni was adopted by an English couple, Henry and Florence Whitman, who were reporters for a now defunct Manchester-based tabloid called the Eyes. Amanda was to be later taken in by a local orphanage but was killed at age seven when the violence of World War II had spread to Turin. In the United Kingdom, Giovanni's school group was notorious for their diplomacy and complacency, picking needless fights on campus and even setting up traps shortly before evacuation in 1940. It wasn't until 1946 that Giovanni was informed of his Italian heritage, and upon hearing of it he left home and joined a casino in Bedfordshire, eventually to be promoted to president at age 22.
When England legalised Pokmon training in 1960, Giovanni saw this as an opportunity to capitalise on something more valuable than 'menial gambling tables.' At first his attempt to host battles at his casino were futile, as the fad had yet to catch on, but by 1966 the profits came swarming in. However, the publicity that the casino was getting was getting worse, since there were allegations against Giovanni of fixing the battles for his favourite opponents, and in a panic he sold the casino in the summer of 1967 and collaborated with his friend George Hanley to create The Angels of Battle, which was supposed to be a betting organisation that placed most of the money and credits in the battle pools that made public battles popular in England, but as Giovanni descended further into the hunger for money and power, he fired Hanley and turned the betting round into a full-scale criminal syndicate. To prevent arrest, he managed to persuade the stock exchange to keep The Angels on the roster so that no-one would know that he was leading a new criminal organisation.
The primary objective of the new syndicate was to dispatch swindlers to stadiums all over Britain and Ireland to swipe Pokmon for use by trainers that they implanted in the tournaments. The British rules stated that no two players from the same group could oppose each other, so Giovanni simply falsified the identities of most of the trainers that he employed. Using a variety of tactics he managed to arrange his trainers in positions that would be awarded prize money for their performance, yet the trainers would get only five percent of the profits. Since the plan was highly successful, the low commission factor was moot. Out of the Pokmon that the syndicate managed to steal, Giovanni seemed to prefer Pokmon stolen near Inverness because of the therapeutic properties of the air at high elevation.
In 1968 Giovanni had decided that swindling trainers provided insufficient aid for his trainers and set up a faction whose purpose was to sneak into refuges and capture Pokmon. This practice became so efficient that it soon overshadowed swindling as a source of income. A year later, upon hearing of the talents of Alexis Uletin and his hybridisation industry, he decided that ordering a Pokmon from him would boost the efficiency of the heists and terrorism. In September 1969 he approached Uletin, who obliged to create a superpower Pokmon for him. That he did by November, and Giovanni was so satisfied that he doubled his payment. Unfortunately, the new Pokmon, Mewtwo, destroyed the laboratory and killed Uletin in the process before the money could change hands.
THE MEWTWO ERA
Prior to 1969, when Team Rocket was still starting out, the forces employed by DiLuzio had become infamous across the UK not for their malice, but actually for the agents' lacklustre battle performance. While every agent was educated in the faction to work around and defeat each trainer in national championships, they had never been able to comprehend the mechanics behind battling at all. This made for what agents would call 'faulty battling'; indeed, 'putting on airs over the menial' became an in-joke among agents that were proficient in battling even before joining Team Rocket.
Mewtwo's role in the objective of Team Rocket was primarily to ease Giovanni's concern for how ineffective his employees were, and he placed a heavy emphasis on this when he announced that the team would move on to conquer Pokmon exploitation ? profits from killing Pokmon and selling their hide, meat, or horns were small either because the influx of Pokmon required to produce them wasn't very strong or the Pokmon were in such bad shape that the products didn't find much favour with the consumers. As with all new human entrants, however, he put Mewtwo to an initiation ? and contrary to predictions that it would rebel, it cooperated and was inducted in the spring of 1971.
Although Mewtwo hadn't been put to much use in the first five years of employment, its presence at many Rocket operations made the mouths of gang bosses, scammers, and two similarly formed teams in Japan that went by Team Magma and Team Aqua water. In 1974, Team Magma's then leader, Aiku 'Maxie' Sangoshima, tried to forge a deal with Giovanni to buy Mewtwo. When Giovanni refused, Sangoshima declared war. The same happened with Team Aqua. In 1976, however, the discovery of Vietnamese runes describing Kyogre and Groudon diverted the two teams' attention, and they took to pursuing them instead. (The two were to disband in 1996 during a reconciliatory operation to capture the two Pokmon, when Kyogre and Groudon drove them out of their abode on Ellesmere Island, Canada, resulting in the deaths of 51 members. Sangoshima and Aqua Leader Archibald Granger were convicted of the act three years later.)
From 1977 onward, though, the number of human employees was plummeting and advertisement proved ineffective, so Giovanni had no other choice but to place Mewtwo as a regular. Mewtwo's first victorious heist was in a bar in Cannes, France, when a rival gang had hatched plans to build a 'snag machine', or an apparatus used to capture Pokmon with double the efficacy of apricorns. (The rival gang, L'quipe de Mort, later became Team Snagem under the direction of Dutch ex-convict Kees Gonzap; the team disbanded in 2001.) After five more heists, Giovanni became so worried about Mewtwo's power that he decided to test them out.
When Mewtwo returned from the first battle test in 1981, against a Magneton in an abandoned Spanish power station, the Magneton was dead and later exploded, destroying much of the station. This was enough to scare Giovanni, so he decided to test it again. The next test, against a herd of Tauros near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA, resulted in all but three Tauros coming out alive, all of them severely wounded. Giovanni became scared even more. When Mewtwo successfully killed off a rogue Rhyhorn in Kenya, Giovanni had had enough. From 1985 onward, Giovanni had it restrained in a special set of armour designed to control its psychic energy.
Although Giovanni's armour was insured for Mewtwo's life expectancy, Giovanni always lived in fear of revenge. And Mewtwo was starting to take more physical damage when it had the armour on. Finally, in 1993, after defeating Gary Oak in a Viridian, Texas gym, one of the shoulder plates was destroyed, probably from too much exposure from attacks. Even though the pauldron was small, Giovanni knew better than to hesitate. He demanded Mewtwo withdrawn from the field and refitted ? but it was too late. Mewtwo's bare skin was healing from the damage, and its mind was open again. Two hours after Ash Ketchum won the gym badge, Mewtwo destroyed the armour and fled from the gym, leaving it in smouldering ruins.
