A Pilot epsiode is the very very first episode of a show, whether it be an anime, cartoon, or even a sitcom. It usually depends whether or not the show will be continued or not.

Like FD said it's the very first episode ever aired. Sadly, most shows fail on their pilot ep. so they never get shown.

It's not neccesarily the first episode, but an episode that is made to give a general idea of who and what everything is.

But it usually is so that when or even if they do air it, people will know what is going on within the show. Even if it is a bit nyaff at times, but for some shows they did it well. That being Scrubs for it made it funny.
