Actually, what I'm trying to figure out is how to put community objects (cash register, urinals,etc.) in a residential lot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't unless you have 'Open for Business' then you start a home business over the phone or computer. Then you can add them to your lot.

I have done so using the university expansion pack. You won't be able to use the register. You will be able to use the expresso machine etc. I've done this while making movies.
First I created a community lot, then I deleted the trash can and the phone booth,
then I use the cheat: changeLotZoning residential,
then exit to neighborhood.
Now you should be able to move sims in.
