This one was originally meant to be centered around Chaos Sorcerer, but as I was looking for the best Light and Dark monsters to pick I noticed that most of them were Spellcasters (Royal Magical Library, Kycoo, Breaker, The Unhappy Maiden, Copycat). So I started a Spellcaster build, and what better Spellcaster build in the game than a Dark Magician deck? Now all my monsters are Spellcasters, and all of them are either Light or Dark-attributes (safe for Kazejin but it's one of my favs), so I have three axes to think about when I duel : Mind that my graveyard always has one light and one dark monster in it so I can summon Chaos Sorcerer anytime; the manipulations that involve the Dark Magician family; and finally, keep some flexibility with my non Dark Magician cards like Magical dimension, Magician's Circle, Copycat, Yami. Let me show you what each card is there for.
Dark Magician is a great 2500 atk beatstick. Although a 7 stars monster, he can be searched and summoned real easily. Truthfully I almost never have to tribute to summon him. And this guy gives access to a super useful Dark Magic Attack, and a powerful and useful too upgraded version in the name of Dark Magician of Chaos. Having Dark Magician of the field is a priority.
Apprentice Magician is a blessing to this deck. He never stays long on the field but gives solid help. His effect can speed up the summoning of a Dark Magician if used on a Skilled Dark Magician, speed up my extra draw if used on a Royal Magical Library, give Breaker some more muscle or the ability to get rid of a second magic/trap card. When destroyed, I almost always summon The Unhappy Maiden for stalling purposes and for having the requirements in my graveyard for Chaos Sorcerer, but that can differ if I need to bring Magician of Faith or Copycat if I'm confident in the latter's staying power. In my duels though, Apprentice Magician is quite often a tribute for Magical Dimension, this combination gives two extra counters, that's also the solid help I was talking about.
Royal Magical Library is an excellent wall. 2200 def under Yami makes it unkillable by most level 4 monsters in the game. Library benefits from the many spells cards that are going to be used in a row.. Also this thing is a magnet to smashing ground, fissure, and shield crush so having it on the field relatively protects your other and probably more valuable monsters on the field.
Copycat is arguably the most badass monster in the game. If Yami is on the field, this guy can take out absolutely any monster without boost the opponent has. (Safe for The Wicked Dreadroot but who runs this thing anyway). Without Yami it's mainly a second class attacker when more powerful monsters are on my field, or a tribute for Magical Dimension, or I send it on suicide battle against monsters I can't deal with. Also, it's a Spirit Reaper killer.
Breaker. Nice Mystical Space Typhoon with 1900atk. I'm so glad that he's Spellcaster and not Warrior as his name suggests. His main drawback is that he doesn't get his counter when he's special summoned.
Kazejin is I have to admit, a bit out of the loop, he doesn't benefit any of the other monsters, he can't be searched by any other way than Gold Sarcophagus but I'm satisfied with his 2400atk and his effect. He benefits from Yami. I admit he's got flaws and doesn't come out to play very often, but I don't want it out.
Kycoo is a generic Spellcaster with a decent atk and a sweet effect, searchable by Magician's Circle. He's one of my brave vaillant level 4 soldiers.
The Unhappy Maiden is mainly a target for the requirements of the summon of Chaos Sorcerer. But she has proven herself to be quite useful in ending battle phases prematurely. Searchable by Apprentice Magician so she's summoned in defense mode. She's also a happy tribute for Magical Dimension.
Dark Magician of Chaos sometimes only reaches the field because I need a spell card that's in my grave. But the other times he's a berserk 2800 attacker capable of banishing enemy monsters upon destruction. This guy is summonable via Dedication, and Magical Dimension. Needless to say he's super easy to summon, super useful and super powerful.
Skilled Dark Magician is excellent. He's my main attack power among the level 4 monsters. 1900 is excellent, 1700 is not bad (careful Smashing Ground). Searchable by Magician's Circle, is able to call out Dark Magician. You need this guy in your starting hand.
Dark Magician Girl is mainly here to use Sage's Stone, then bye bye. Otherwise she can provide emergency attack power via Magician's Circle.
Chaos Sorcerer is an excellent monster. He can pop out of nowhere just with two monsters in the graveyard, banish enemy threat monsters or attack with a decent 2300 atk. Almost every monster in the deck can be used two call forth the big boy so his summoning requirements are never a problem. Also, one nasty trick is that, despite his card text saying that he can only be summoned by banishing monsters, he can too be summoned from the grave with premature burial! (Note though that every time I did that he had been destroyed by battle. I have never tried to discard him from my hand to PrematureBurial him.) Anyways. Recycling him with A Feather of the Phoenix or Pot of Avarice is never a bad idea. He's in 90% of the cases the one I call with Gold Sarcophagus.
Magician's Valkyria represents another one of my brave soldiers, the ones I am willing to let them take risks. 1800 def is decent, she can be a downgrade Royal Magical Library. She's a perfect way to temporarily protect the low attack monsters I have in attack mode (an Apprentice Magician I couldn't tribute right away or a Royal Magical Library that need a little bit more time face up.) Having two of these chicks at the same time on the field prevents the opponent from declaring an attack, since every one of my monsters is Spellcaster. She's a happy sacrifice for Magical Dimension and Chaos Sorcerer.
Dark Magic Attack is my personnal Harpie Feather Duster. This card is beast, and I run two.
Dedication Through Light and Darkness : a quick-play spell that lets me troll opponents during battle phase with an additional 2800 beatstick and a way to get a free spell from the grave.
Graceful Charity : same as in every deck. Draw power. Discard power.
Gold Sarcophagus : I almost always call Chaos Sorcerer with it. Else, if no particular emergency I call Magician's Circle for flexibility, Yami or Heavy Storm.
Magical Dimension : a compulsory card for every Spellcaster deck. This is the entrance for my high level monsters (they're 5, that's quite a lot but this way I can spam the card's destruction effect.) If I don't have high level's in my hand but only level 4, it doesn't matter, I use it still to destroy opponent's monsters. Careful though, if you summon Dark Magician of Chaos and you destroy a monster with Magical Dimension, you'll miss Chaos' opportunity to take a spell from the grave. I made my deck all-Spellcaster especially so that I never miss an opportunity to have a Spellcaster on my field and another in my hand.
Premature Burial : same as in every deck. Here it means an extra target for the sacrifice of Magical Dimension, or the opportunity to bring back high attack spellcasters, bring back Chaos Sorcerer, there are plenty of ways to play this card. Resurrected Apprentice Magician, Dark Magician of Chaos, Kazejin, Copycat will be able to use their effects again, a resurrected Breaker won't.
Tribute to the Doomed : Discard power, and the most flexible of spell cards in the game, you don't have requirements from the target to use it (unlike with lightning vortex, shield crush, fissure, hammer shot or smashing ground).
Sage's Stone : If Dark Magician Girl is around, welcome Dark Magician. If she's not, don't hesitate to discard it.
Pot of avarice. Because every one needs it. Lets you draw two sweet cards.
Dark Magic Curtains : Welcome Dark Magician! Too bad you're a huge drama queen who won't share the spotlight and won't let me summon anything else than you!
A Feather of the Phoenix : Some would say this card results in a loss of card advantage. I disagree. Make it be the third counter on Royal Magical Library and we'll see who loses card advantage. Plus, the discard power is sweet.
Heavy Storm. Staple. It's here in case I don't have or can't use Dark Magic attack. I suppose there's no need for a Mystical Space Typhoon since I don't lose from using Heavy Storm, due to my being very light on traps and spells that stay on the field (namely Yami and Premature Burial).
Yami gives a neat 200 atk and def bonus to all my monsters. I prefer it to Mystic Plasma Zone here (I could have used it though, for my main attacking monsters are Dark) because it's more selective, fewer opponents in the game run Spellcasters and Fiends, in comparison to those using Dark monsters. With Yami Copycat is beast and Dark Magician of Chaos reaches 3000 atk.
Magician's Circle is a great trap that lets me summon any of my low level monsters + Dark Magician Girl if needed. I won't list all the combinations due to its being highly flexible. The trap can also be activated when your opponent attacks with a Spellcaster so that's neat. And the opponent also *has* to summon a Spellcaster if there's one in their deck. And they're screwed. Because in the game they only pack Magician of Faith or Exodia. Either case they don't want to lose it in battle. Especially if my Kycoo is here!
Solemn Judgment and Raigeki Break are compulsory traps in any deck to my mind.
I think I've covered it all, weaknesses to this deck are if the opponent prevents you from special summoning; you might also want to have something to take your banished cards back like Return from the Different Dimension (there aren't many cards like that in the game, I think there's no option to retrieve banished spells or traps, maybe Erikshieler, I don't remember). I think this deck is harmonious in itself and I've had excellent (truthfully, excellent) results in the game.
I'd be glad to hear what you think of it.
